Kiran's journey in complex infrastructure jobs

"I'm thrilled to share insights from my 20-year journey in project controls and leading Programme Management Offices (PMOs).

My career has been enriched by working across various sectors like defence, aviation, water, and rail, engaging with a multitude of complex infrastructure projects and diverse clients."

Early career and passion for infrastructure

"Believe it or not, I started my career in design engineering after earning a BSc in Engineering Product Design. My initial years were spent in the design industry, but I was drawn to the thrill of seeing large-scale engineering projects transition from plans to reality.

This passion led me to a major aerospace company, where I began as a Junior Planner for military avionics teams. Here, I learned the crucial importance of planning and controls, integrating cost and schedule performance well before it became industry standard.

This foundational experience ignited my enthusiasm for infrastructure jobs and set me on a path of shaping the future."

Career-defining infrastructure projects

"My career took a significant turn when I joined a major infrastructure mega project at Heathrow Terminal 5. As a Project Controls Engineer and later as the Project Controls Manager for the Rail & Tunnels team, I was deeply involved in on-site operations and project delivery.

Collaborating with architects, engineers, and senior stakeholders, I saw firsthand how essential project controls are to successful outcomes. The pride of seeing my name on a plaque at the terminal's entrance, alongside the names of 2,000 others, remains one of my most cherished memories, symbolizing our collective impact on future generations."

Expanding horizons in infrastructure

"Following Heathrow, I ventured into the water industry with Thames Water, now part of AtkinsRéalis.

Leading a team of cost planners in a significant role, I expanded my leadership skills and tackled a diverse portfolio of 300 schemes valued at around £1 billion.

Even after a brief maternity leave, I returned to the infrastructure sector with renewed vigor, contributing to the Terminal 2 multi-storey car park and ancillary buildings at Heathrow.

It was immensely rewarding to see my name on another plaque, knowing our work would benefit millions of passengers."

Leadership and growth at AtkinsRéalis

"I later took on a key role leading the Programme Management Office for the Smart Metering Programme at Thames Water via AtkinsRéalis. This position involved steering a team to deliver over 500,000 smart water meters successfully."

"At the onset of the pandemic, I transitioned to a permanent role with AtkinsRéalis as an Associate Director, later becoming Head of Programme Controls for the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) and Head of Discipline for Project Controls in Transportation.

Balancing these roles allowed me to grow my team and contribute significantly to the sector. In 2021, I was promoted to Regional Director, and by 2023, I assumed the role of Practice Director, leading a dynamic team of over 150 professionals. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling, marked by continuous learning and working alongside some of the best in the industry."
