At AtkinsRéalis, our architects are driven by purpose, innovation, and impact. But outside the profession, a few misconceptions still linger about what architects actually do.

So, we spoke with Sarah, an Associate Architect at AtkinsRéalis, to bust some of the most common myths and share what architecture really looks like today.

Inside the Architect’s Role: Myth vs. Reality | AtkinsRéalis Careers

Myth 1: Architects only draw beautiful sketches

This is perhaps the most common misconception. While sketching is a valuable tool in early ideation, it's only the tip of the architectural iceberg. Architects at AtkinsRéalis are deeply involved with functional planning, structural logic, sustainability principles, regulatory frameworks, and multidisciplinary coordination. From hand-drawn concepts to complex digital models and integrated BIM workflows, their work shapes how people live, move, and experience space.

Myth 2: Architects use tons of paper

Gone are the days of overflowing drafting tables. Today, we work digitally, leveraging tools like Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, and more to bring designs to life. At AtkinsRéalis, we're committed to sustainable design practices—and that includes reducing waste through smart technology, automation, and digital collaboration.

Myth 3: Architects work independently

Architecture is a team sport. Architects work hand-in-hand with engineers, urban planners, environmental consultants, and clients to design solutions that are aesthetically pleasing, but also functional, cost-effective, and sustainable. Every project is an ecosystem of expertise, and at the heart of it all?

Clear and constant communication to translate those great ideas into great buildings.

Myth 4: Architects only design buildings

Our architects shape entire environments – from urban masterplans and transportation hubs to interior spaces and public realism. Their work influences how systems connect, how people move, and how communities thrive. It is about just design structures – architects design experiences, networks, and futures. It isn't about designing walls and roofs; it is about shaping the spaces in between.

Myth 5: Architecture is only about the present

At AtkinsRéalis, architecture isn't about solving today's problems, it is about anticipating tomorrow's possibilities. Our architects plan for climate challenges, embracing digital transformation, and creating spaces that evolve to the needs of tomorrow. We're not just designing for now—we're building legacies for generations to come.
