8 essential skills for Senior Architects

What does a Senior Architect do?

Senior Architects collaborate with clients to drive discussions to resolutions based on risk assessments they have carried out as well as their technical expertise. They are responsible for overseeing junior team members and report to Project Managers

The AtkinsRéalis Architecture and Planning division is looking for talented and skilled Senior Architects to join our multidisciplinary team.

We believe that everyone deserves access to brilliant buildings, places, and spaces, regardless of who they are, where they live, or their circumstances.

We are creators, architects, designers, engineers, and specialists who share the same experiences and ambitions as the communities we serve. Learn more about the soft and hard skills you need to succeed in a Senior Architect job:

What are the 8 skills you need to be a Senior Architect?

A lot goes into the senior architect job description, so we want to break it down for you. Senior Architects need a well-rounded skillset that combines technical expertise with interpersonal and leadership skills. This balance allows them to excel in their role, manage their teams effectively, and ultimately contribute to the success of projects.

At AtkinsRéalis, professional development is a priority so you will get the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge. And that is one of the reasons our colleagues have the advantage of access to a high-ranging training portfolio and development activities. This training is designed to help make the best of an individual's abilities and talents.

We also actively support staff in achieving corporate membership in relevant institutions. All of our architect jobs come with the comfort of knowing you'll be an investment to our organization and therefore trained and developed as such.

Soft skills for a Senior Architect

  • Architect responsibilities range broadly. You will have excellent communication skills, both spoken and written. As a Senior Architect, you will often be bridging the gap between departments, project teams, clients, vendors, contractors, consultants, and building and permitting officials. This means you will need the ability to convey your ideas clearly as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • You will be organised and efficient, with a keen eye for attention to detail and accuracy. These qualities enhance your ability to deliver high-quality designs, maintain client satisfaction, and manage projects effectively.
  • You will be proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to take initiative in response to direction from project leaders, directors, and partners. This role involves resolving design issues in a creative and pragmatic manner so being proactive is essential.
  • You will be a team player, with a flexible and open attitude towards new ways of working and collaborating. We work together and embrace each other's unique contributions to deliver amazing results for all at AtkinsRéalis . And that's why collaboration is one of our core values.

Hard skills for a Senior Architect

  • You will have good conceptual and design skills, with aesthetic flair. A strong design sense ensures that the final product is both functional and visually appealing.
  • You will have an excellent ability in Revit and Adobe Suite. These tools are essential for creating detailed drawings and renderings that communicate your designs to stakeholders.
  • You will have experience and knowledge of compliance requirements as this contributes to the accuracy and quality of architectural plans and minimises risks.
  • You will possess a solid knowledge of products, materials, zoning/building codes, and construction methods. This helps the team to adhere to legal standards and streamlines the approval process.
