Engineering connections and contributions at AtkinsRéalis

Hi I’m Jacquelyn. Returning to AtkinsRéalis for a second internship was an easy decision. The supportive work environment, meaningful projects and incredible mentorship I received last summer made me excited to come back. I knew this was a place where I could continue growing my technical skills while contributing to projects that truly matter.

This summer, I’ve had the opportunity to work in the ITS/Traffic department in Houston, Texas, under the guidance of my manager Alesha and intern coordinators Miguel and Maisah. The experience was both enriching and inspiring. From day one, my team was welcoming and eager to share their knowledge. Their willingness to answer questions and involve me in a variety of projects helped me develop not only as an engineer but also as a professional.

One project stood out to me due to its complexity and a personal connection. It was fascinating to learn how large signs are designed and developed based on current standards. What made it even more special was that I’ve driven that road many times, and knowing I contributed to its improvement was incredibly rewarding.

Throughout my internship, I’ve received valuable advice, but one piece that really stuck with me was: Always keep learning and ask questions early. That mindset has encouraged me to be proactive, seek clarification and deepen my understanding of the work I’m doing.

Beyond the technical experience, I’ve also enjoyed participating in Employee Resource Groups like Neurodiversity, HOLA and WIL. These events have offered fresh perspectives and created a sense of community within the office. I also took part in several in-office events organized by our EAC, which were great opportunities to connect with colleagues outside my immediate team and learn more about the company culture.

Speaking of culture, AtkinsRéalis truly fosters an inclusive, collaborative and supportive environment. People here are generous with their time and knowledge, and that makes a huge difference.

As I wrap up my internship, I’m taking with me a deeper appreciation for the importance of communication and collaboration in engineering. Technical skills are essential, but understanding others’ perspectives and working well together is just as critical for project success.
