Transforming the future, one innovation at a time — SY Liu’s insight working at AtkinsRéalis

What does it take to transform an industry? Hard work, innovative technology, and a culture that fosters creativity. This is how AtkinsRéalis, a global leader in project management, engineering and design, drives digital transformation and innovation. We had the opportunity to catch up with SY Liu, Digital Solutions Manager in Hong Kong, whose career exemplifies the exciting possibilities and impact that technology has in the engineering industry.

Tech Transformation at AtkinsRéalis | A Story of Innovation

From transformers toys to transformative projects

For our subject, the seeds of curiosity were planted early.

I've always loved Transformers toys—how one thing can turn into many things. This love for transformation has been foundational in my work, especially transitioning from CAD to BIM (Building Information Modelling) in architecture and construction, he shared.

This fascination blossomed into a remarkable career that began with a passion for interior design and a knack for technology. Before university, he picked up ArchiCAD and soon earned a teaching role, instructing students on its use while completing his own studies in architecture. This early exposure to BIM laid the groundwork for a career focused on innovation.

When he moved to Hong Kong, he found an industry facing a significant skill gap in BIM. SY's unique expertise not only filled this gap but also allowed him to play a key role in transforming how projects were delivered.

Beyond work, he also finds balance through his love of football, representing the Hong Kong Institute of Architects team as a striker. It's a great way to stay connected and form friendships across the industry, he said.

A journey through AtkinsRéalis

Having been with AtkinsRéalis for five years, SY's career has been nothing short of inspiring. Starting as a Digital Transformation Lead, he focused on introducing and implementing BIM across global projects. This hands-on role involved empowering teams of architects and engineers to identify opportunities for automation and improve design efficiency.

Coming from an architecture background, learning the challenges engineers face on projects has been incredibly insightful," he shared. "The efficiencies we gained allowed us to do more value engineering and experiment with new ideas.

SY's time at AtkinsRéalis has been marked by notable accomplishments. One he is particularly proud of is Hong Kong's contribution to the ISO19650 Global Kitemark for four consecutive years. Each year, new projects and colleagues demonstrated excellence, earning successful audit outcomes.

Additionally, AtkinsRéalis received the Gold Award in the AEC Consultant category from the Hong Kong Institute for BIM in 2023, further solidifying his role as an industry leader.

How technology is shaping the future

The role of technology in driving innovation at AtkinsRéalis cannot be overstated.

Keeping up with industry changes is crucial. Technology, like BIM, ensures we stay competitive by improving collaboration, reducing errors, and allowing us to achieve more in less time.

Beyond the technical tools, the workplace culture also plays a major role. AtkinsRéalis' openness to new ideas fosters innovation, a speak up culture, and creativity across teams. Knowledge-sharing sessions, for instance, inspire employees to tackle challenges in fresh, forward-thinking ways. While initiatives like the "#WOW", a platform where employees can recognize their colleagues' achievements, promoting a high-performing culture where everyone thrives together.

AtkinsRéalis has one of the greatest work environments I've been a part of," he said. "It's a place where every idea is valued, and innovation is genuinely encouraged.

The road ahead

When asked about the future of artificial intelligence in the industry, he said:

AI will soon achieve seamless integration, eliminating interoperability barriers. Collaboration will become even easier, and exchanging ideas and data will feel effortless.

AtkinsRéalis is focused on the road ahead, particularly in expanding their presence in energy markets across Asia. While competition and skill gaps remain challenges, SY is confident that continued innovation and adaptability will keep the organization at the forefront of the industry.

Why choose AtkinsRéalis?

For him, the culture at AtkinsRéalis was a major draw. The helpful, collaborative environment made it easy to share ideas and contribute to meaningful projects that are building the future.

I joined because of the potential to grow alongside a team that values every contribution. I stayed because this company continually supports professional development and rewards achievements.

Looking ahead, SY sees his role evolving as he focuses on understanding and implementing new cutting-edge technologies. The goal? To continue driving innovation and growth, both individually and as part of a team.
