My name is Louise, and I am currently working as a Roadway Design in the Atlanta, Georgia, office. I’m a senior Civil Engineering student at Kennesaw State University, and this is my second summer interning with the organization. I chose to return because of the positive and enriching experience I had last summer. The supportive team, meaningful projects and opportunities for growth made it an easy decision to come back.
This summer’s experience was both educational and inspiring. I’ve had the chance to work closely with the Roadway department under the guidance of Emily, gaining valuable hands-on experience in roadway design. My favorite project so far is one I’m currently working on in which involves modifying medians and U-turn lanes. It’s been exciting to see the entire process unfold from the very beginning. Being involved in a project that directly impacts the community I live in has made the experience even more meaningful.

Throughout my internship, I have received helpful advice, specifically the reminder not to be afraid to ask for help. As someone who tends to try to figure everything out on my own, that simple piece of advice has changed how I approach tasks and collaborate with my colleagues. It’s helped me grow both personally and professionally.
I also had the opportunity to attend the Women in Engineering Day call hosted by Women in Leadership (WIL), which was very empowering. In addition, I participated in several office events like lunch-and-learns and Q&A sessions. These experiences were insightful and gave me a broader understanding of the different roles and groups within AtkinsRéalis.
One of the things I appreciate most about the company is its culture. AtkinsRéalis fosters a welcoming environment where everyone is understanding, helpful and inclusive. That kind of atmosphere makes it easy to learn and grow.
Some of the biggest takeaways from this internship are the importance of communication, collaboration and a constant desire to learn. Asking questions, sharing ideas and working as a team are essential not just for project success, but for personal and professional development as well.
