Insights Shaping the future of water supply at Havant Thicket Reservoir

AtkinsRéalis is proud to play a pivotal role in the Havant Thicket Reservoir, an innovative and environmentally focused project in Hampshire.

Commissioned to design the reservoir and secure planning consent, this development addresses water supply challenges across the region. It represents the first reservoir to be built in Southeast England since the 1970s.

With a dual focus on improving water resilience and supporting regional development, this project is a game-changer for the local community and the environment.

Meeting the region’s water needs

The Havant Thicket Reservoir and its associated 5km pipeline have been meticulously planned to ensure secure water supplies for the medium and long term. They will:

  • Improve resilience for Portsmouth Water’s existing customers.
  • Support housing growth in the region.
  • Provide additional water to Southern Water to address projected deficits.

The pipeline will transport water from Bedhampton Springs to fill the reservoir during winter and supply treated water in summer. This vital infrastructure ensures both reliability and sustainability.

A new recreational hub for Hampshire

Beyond its critical role in water management, the Havant Thicket Reservoir will create a vibrant recreational resource. Plans include:

  • A visitor centre with education facilities.
  • Open spaces and accessible walking trails.
  • Wetland habitats supporting local wildlife and nature conservation.

This development will not only enhance the local environment but also foster a sense of community, offering a space for leisure and learning.

Environmentally-led design at its core

The design of the Havant Thicket Reservoir integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, respecting and enhancing the natural landscape. Key environmental considerations include:

  • Protecting ancient woodlands and species like Bechstein’s bats.
  • Preserving the historical and cultural significance of Staunton Country Park, which features a Grade II* registered park and garden.
  • Minimising visual and ecological impacts through innovative landscape integration.

A proposed staircase leading to the embankment will offer breathtaking views of the reservoir, wetlands, and surrounding countryside, blending functionality with aesthetics.

We strive to approach every task and decision with a commitment to minimising the environmental, societal, and economic impacts of its activities, ensuring sustainable outcomes both globally and locally. This aligns nicely with the Havant Thicket Reservoir project.

Adapting engagement strategies during COVID-19

When COVID-19 disrupted plans for face-to-face public consultations, the project team pivoted to a fully digital approach. Activities included:

  • Sending postcards to 50,000 households to raise awareness.
  • Launching an interactive virtual exhibition with 3D visualisations and feedback tools.
  • Hosting webinars with live Q&A sessions to address community questions.
  • Ensuring accessibility by offering printed consultation materials with freepost envelopes.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with 80% of participants supporting the proposals and 90% approval among young people. The feedback shaped final design decisions and ensured the community's voice was heard.

Creative engagement for a lasting impression

Our Creative Design team brought the Havant Thicket Reservoir to life through innovative consultation materials, including:

  • A 3D visualisation film for virtual tours.
  • Digital brochures and CGI animations highlighting the reservoir’s beauty.
  • Social media assets to reach wider audiences.

This award-winning approach set a new standard for public engagement, ensuring the project resonated with diverse stakeholders.

Leaving a lasting legacy

The Havant Thicket Reservoir is more than just an infrastructure project. It’s a legacy for the region, providing:

  • Employment opportunities during construction.
  • Skills development for the local workforce.
  • Long-term environmental and community benefits.

We are honoured to contribute to this landmark project, delivering sustainable solutions that support both people and the planet.
