Discover practical career advice from Eric Chung, a recent graduate who shares lessons on professional growth, leadership, and building workplace relationships.

Starting your career after graduation can feel overwhelming. The transition from university life to professional environments brings new challenges, expectations, and opportunities that textbooks rarely prepare you for. Eric Chung, a recent graduate who completed his sandwich program at Loughborough University, shares his journey and the valuable lessons he's learned during his first year in the workforce.

His story offers practical insights that can help new graduates navigate their early career steps with confidence and purpose.

Career growth tips from a recent graduate's journey

Building your professional foundation through personal passions

Eric's approach to career development stems from an unexpected source: his relationship with music. As a self-taught pianist who later took formal lessons and passed several grade examinations, he discovered that traditional learning methods didn't align with his personal philosophy.

"The conventional ways of learning piano and undergoing grade examinations felt robotic," Eric explains. "It was almost like I was simply regurgitating the music script. My music philosophy is always to learn it, perfect it, but most importantly make it yours."

This mindset translated directly into his professional approach. He applies the same three-step process to workplace tasks: learn the conventional method, become fluent and confident with the skill, then develop and improve efficiency through innovative methods.

Making the most of company culture and orientation

First impressions matter, and company orientation programs provide crucial opportunities for new graduates. The Hong Kong graduate program, in particular, the GradConnect Orientation Camp stood out to Eric's experience at AtkinsRéalis.

He highlights the importance of engaging fully with these early experiences. "It was great hearing the stories of our seniors' journey and their invaluable insights," he recalls. "The two-day event was definitely the highlight of 2024 with many fun activities."

Key takeaways for new graduates:

  • Actively participate in orientation programs

  • Listen to senior colleagues' stories and insights

  • Take advantage of networking opportunities

  • Engage with company culture from day one

Career growth tips from a recent graduate's journey

The power of speaking up in professional environments

One of the most significant aspects of Eric's workplace is the "speak-up attitude" that allows employees at all levels to contribute. This environment creates opportunities for learning and growth that might not exist in more hierarchical organizations.

"Regardless of who is right or wrong, being able to speak up allows for more shared perspectives, and as a result, we can all learn more from each other," Eric notes.

For new graduates, this lesson is particularly important. Don't assume that your junior status means your ideas aren't valuable. Companies benefit from fresh perspectives, and speaking up demonstrates initiative and engagement.

The art of asking questions

Eric's most practical advice for career growth centers on one fundamental principle: never be afraid to ask questions. This simple strategy can accelerate your learning curve and demonstrate your commitment to improvement.

"Always ask and never only ask one person," he emphasizes. "Everyone here is really supportive, and as long as you ask and show eagerness to grow, you'll have plenty to learn."

Strategic question-asking tips:

  • Ask multiple people to get different perspectives

  • Show genuine eagerness to learn

  • Follow up on answers to demonstrate engagement

  • Take notes to show you value the shared information

Innovation through quality-focused freedom

Eric's workplace demonstrates how companies can foster innovation by focusing on outcomes rather than processes. This approach allows employees to find creative solutions while maintaining high standards.

"As long as your work quality meets the requirements, it's quite free to find your own creative ways to improve efficiency at work." he explains.

This environment encourages professional growth by allowing employees to experiment with different approaches and develop their unique working styles.

Building team connections beyond work tasks

Strong professional relationships often develop through informal interactions. Eric values the casual conversations about life outside work that help build deeper connections and trust within his team.

"I really enjoy casual chats about life outside of work, it's very refreshing and builds deeper connections and trust within the team," he says. "I feel more included and free to speak up if there's anything I'm worried about."

These relationships create a supportive environment where team members feel comfortable seeking help and aiding others.

Career growth tips from a recent graduate's journey

Communication as a problem-solving tool

Eric witnessed firsthand how clear communication can resolve workplace conflicts and confusion. When his project team faced challenges, a senior member's decisive communication approach helped get everyone back on track.

"Initially there were some difficulties getting over hurdles, but through collaborative and clear communication we were able to adapt and overcome these issues." he recalls.

This example demonstrates the importance of transparent communication in professional settings and how addressing issues directly can prevent larger problems.

Preparing for future industry changes

Looking ahead, Eric recognizes that staying current with industry trends and technology will be crucial for long-term career success. He specifically mentions the implementation of AI and the ethical considerations that come with technological advancement.

"We would have to stay on top of the trends and learn to manage new technology," he notes about his evolving role.

For new graduates, this highlights the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in building a sustainable career.

Building achievement through team collaboration

Eric's proudest achievement during his time at the company wasn't work-related but demonstrated the value of team collaboration. Participating in the dragon boat festival, his team won two awards, but the real achievement was building relationships with colleagues.

"The biggest achievement in my eyes was meeting and having fun with so many kind colleagues," he reflects.

This perspective shows how professional success encompasses both individual accomplishments and relationship building.
