From intern to infrastructure contributor: Ganesha on building a career in geotechnical engineering

Ganesha R’s journey at AtkinsRéalis began as an intern and grew into a rewarding career in geotechnical engineering. Through mentorship, continuous learning, and opportunities to work on global infrastructure projects like Sizewell C, he has built a path defined by curiosity, collaboration, and growth.

At AtkinsRéalis, every career begins with curiosity. For Ganesha R, that curiosity started during his internship and grew into a passion for geotechnical engineering — a field that sits at the foundation of some of the world’s most complex infrastructure projects.

From joining as a student intern to contributing to major global projects, Ganesha’s journey reflects the power of learning, mentorship, and staying open to new possibilities.

The beginning

Ganesha began his journey with AtkinsRéalis in 2019 as an intern while pursuing his master’s degree. During his two‑month internship with the Ground Engineering and Tunnelling team, he discovered where his interests truly lay.

“Those two months confirmed my passion for geotechnical engineeringa niche field I feel lucky to be part of,” he says.

What stood out most to him was the energy and commitment of the team working on major infrastructure projects.

“I could see how the work we do contributes to projects that make a real difference. That’s when I knew I wanted to be part of it.”

Learning and growth

After completing his studies, Ganesha joined through the India Graduate Development Programan experience that helped him transition smoothly from campus to corporate life.

“The program helped bridge the gap between academics and industry. It gave me the confidence to step into the professional world.”

Communication quickly became one of the most important skills he developed. Working across teams and projects helped him strengthen his ability to collaborate and express ideas clearly.

At the same time, he embraced evolving technology.

“Technology is always changing, and it’s important to adapt. Recently I’ve been exploring AI tools like Copilot to work smarter and improve efficiency.”

Along the way, mistakes became valuable lessons.

“Every challenge teaches you something. I’ve always looked up to my seniors and taken every opportunity to learn from them.”

A proud milestone

One of the defining moments in Ganesha’s journey so far has been contributing to the Sizewell C nuclear project.

“For geotechnical engineers, projects like this are both exciting and challenging. It pushed me to upskill, develop new tools, and stretch my capabilities.”

Beyond the technical experience, the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the organization has also shaped his growth.

“The people here make a huge difference. Connecting with talented professionals across teams has helped me grow both personally and professionally.”

For Ganesha, the culture within the Global Technology Centre (GTC) is something he deeply values.

“It’s the collaborative environment and supportive culture that make this place truly special.”

Support that made a difference

Mentorship played a key role in helping Ganesha navigate the early stages of his career.

“I’ve been fortunate to have a great mentor in my current line manager, S.V. Anil Kumar, who guided me through my early days and helped me find my footing.”

The support extended beyond mentorship. Colleagues across the team were always willing to share their knowledge and offer guidance whenever needed, creating an environment where learning felt natural and collaborative.

“That support meant I never felt alone, even when things got challenging.”

Ganesha also draws inspiration from senior leaders across the organization.

“I try to learn something from each of them — whether it’s leadership, decision‑making, or how they approach challenges.”

Life outside work

Outside of work, Ganesha enjoys staying active and exploring new places.

Badminton and trekking are among his favourite ways to unwind, while spending time with friendswhether watching movies or simply catching uphelps him recharge.

Travelling is another passion.

“It allows me to meet new people and experience different perspectives. Interestingly, it’s also helped improve how I collaborate with people at work.”

Advice for new joiners

For those starting their careers, Ganesha’s advice is simple but powerful.

“Focus on getting your basics right. Technology is amazing, but your core knowledge is what helps you truly understand and apply it.”

He also encourages new professionals to stay curious and engaged.

“Be open to learning and don’t hesitate to get involved in different initiatives. It’s one of the best ways to meet people and expand your network.”

And when it comes to growth, he believes consistency matters more than competition.

Don’t worry about competing with others. Just keep learning, improving, and doing your best that’s what truly makes the difference.”

Ganesha’s journey reflects how curiosity, mentorship, and continuous learning can shape a meaningful career.
