The confidence to explore, the courage to innovate, and the opportunity to grow: Sindhu's journey at AtkinsRéalis.

Sindhu joined AtkinsRéalis through the India Graduate Development Programme in 2020. Five years later, her journey reflects the power of curiosity, innovation, and a willingness to step beyond her comfort zone.

At AtkinsRéalis, careers are built through curiosity, ownership, and the confidence to take on new challenges.

Since joining through the India Graduate Development Programme in 2020, Sindhu has grown from a graduate engineer into a Senior Engineer, contributing to major infrastructure projects across the globe while continuously expanding her technical expertise, leadership skills, and professional network.

From helping deliver award winning flood defence infrastructure to embracing technology, driving innovation, and contributing to the wider engineering community, her journey reflects what is possible when talent is supported by opportunity.

Finding My Purpose Through Engineering

When I look back on my journey at AtkinsRéalis, I see a story of learning, growth, and discovering what truly motivates me as an engineer.

Sindhu with team

I joined the company in 2020 after completing my Master's in Structural Engineering from MIT Manipal. As a campus hire through the India Graduate Development Programme, I still remember the excitement of progressing through each stage of the recruitment process and the sense that I was about to begin something meaningful.

What attracted me most was the purpose of engineering a better future for our planet and its people. It aligned closely with how I have always viewed engineering. For me, engineering has never been just about calculations and technical solutions. It is about creating infrastructure that improves lives, supports communities, and leaves a positive impact on the world around us.

Growing Through Opportunity

My first project was a flood defence scheme in Denmark, which gave me an early understanding of how engineering solutions can create meaningful impact for communities.

Soon afterwards, I joined the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier project, an experience that became a defining chapter in my career.

From the outset, I was trusted with significant responsibility. I developed originator level design calculations, explored opportunities to optimize the structure, and looked for ways to improve sustainability within the design. Driven by curiosity, I also engaged directly with suppliers to better understand materials and their applications, which opened up valuable discussions within the wider project team.

What stood out most was the culture of collaboration. Every idea was welcomed. Every question was encouraged. That environment gave me the confidence to contribute beyond my role and continuously challenge myself to think differently.

When the project was recognised with the 2024 Excellence Award for Purpose Driven Success, it was a proud moment. It demonstrated how innovation, teamwork, and shared purpose can come together to create meaningful outcomes.

Beyond project delivery, I actively sought opportunities to broaden my experience. As a Knowledge Champion, I contributed to initiatives that strengthened technical capability and encouraged knowledge sharing across teams. Leading the Competition Cell helped me develop leadership and stakeholder management skills, while participating as a finalist in MERIT and ENGINUITY gave me valuable exposure to commercial thinking and business strategy.

Each of these experiences helped me grow not only as an engineer, but also as a professional.

The support I received from mentors and leaders throughout this journey has been invaluable. Their guidance, encouragement, and willingness to invest in my development have played a significant role in shaping both my confidence and technical direction.

Learning to Lead Through Innovation

As my career progressed, I had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, from a pumping station in Hong Kong to my current role on Sizewell C

Today, I contribute to the design and analysis of maritime structures, including the Beach Landing Facility and coastal protection systems. Working on projects of this scale has deepened my understanding of complex infrastructure and strengthened my appreciation for multidisciplinary collaboration.

Alongside project work, I have always been passionate about finding smarter ways to solve problems.

That curiosity led me to teach myself Python and explore how automation could improve efficiency in everyday engineering tasks. What began as a personal learning journey soon became a practical way to streamline workflows and create additional value for the team.

This work later earned me recognition as a finalist in the Paul Brayshaw Early Careers Competition, an achievement that reinforced my belief that innovation often starts with curiosity and a willingness to learn something new.

Beyond my day to day role, I continue to engage with the wider engineering profession as a Graduate Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). Participating in council elections and connecting with peers across the industry has broadened my perspective and strengthened my commitment to shaping the future of structural engineering.

Creativity Beyond Engineering

While engineering has been a major part of my journey, I have also discovered the importance of creating space for personal interests and creativity.

I enjoy reading, travelling, and exploring emerging technologies. More recently, I fulfilled a long-standing ambition by taking up painting and sketching.

What started as a hobby quickly became something more meaningful. Painting gives me the opportunity to slow down, think differently, and reconnect with creativity. Interestingly, many of the qualities it develops, patience, observation, and attention to detail, also influence how I approach engineering challenges.

Throughout every stage of my journey, my family has remained my greatest source of support and encouragement. Their belief in me has helped keep me grounded while continuing to push myself forward.

Looking Ahead

Over the past five years, I have grown from a graduate engineer into a Senior Engineer. It has been a journey shaped by learning, perseverance, opportunity, and the support of incredible colleagues, mentors, and leaders.

If there is one lesson I have learned, it is that growth begins when you are willing to step outside your comfort zone. Opportunities rarely arrive fully formed. Often, they begin with curiosity, initiative, and the confidence to raise your hand and try something new.

At AtkinsRéalis, I have found an environment that encourages exactly that. It is a place where people are approachable, ideas are valued, and learning never stops.

No matter your role or level of experience, there is always someone willing to share their knowledge, offer guidance, and support your development.

That culture of collaboration, trust, and belonging continues to inspire me every day.
