Do you need an engineering degree to succeed as a graduate surveyor?

I'm Alex, an Assistant Building Surveyor in the Project & Programme Services team. I studied International Business, which doesn't traditionally lead to construction, and joined AtkinsRéalis as a non-cognate graduate. Since then, I've been completing an MSc in Building Surveying part-time while working as a building surveyor. In my role, I help clients manage their assets by conducting condition surveys and advising on necessary works. Everything I do goes towards making our cities and communities safer, more sustainable, and more accessible.

What has been your favorite experience on the programme?

I enjoy the variety in my role, from the hands-on work of conducting condition surveys and site inspections, which allows me to visit new places, to the technical challenge of designing and specifying works, where I apply my building pathology knowledge to solve issues. Acting as Contract Administrator, I oversee the construction phase to ensure projects are completed safely, correctly, and on schedule, which is crucial for successful outcomes.

What is the best thing about working for AtkinsRéalis?

What I love most about AtkinsRéalis is the strong support network of colleagues encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone to learn new things. The diversity of opportunities available to graduates enables you to pursue your interests. I became interested in accessibility after studying this at University. I now conduct access audits, advising clients on how their buildings can be more accessible to people with disabilities.

What is your top tip for new graduates?

Join initiatives outside of your day-to-day role. It's expanded my network and opened up new collaborations across the organization. As part of the West Region Next Generation Team, I've helped promote social value by organizing fundraisers and team-building events, including the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge for Mind Charity. I'm also part of the Reverse Mentoring Programme, where I have monthly one-on-one sessions with a Regional Director. It has boosted my confidence and provided valuable business exposure.

How is your professional development going?

From day one, I thrived in AtkinsRéalis' hands-on environment. Applying my academic learning to real-life projects has been invaluable and accelerates my professional development. I started as a Trainee Building Surveyor on the Bristol team, supporting several projects at local schools, including roof replacements, WC refurbishments, and extensions. After two years, I transferred to the London team and now take on a more independent role, managing fabric maintenance projects for Royal Mail.

Why choose AtkinsRéalis?

AtkinsRéalis' Early Careers programme provides graduates with widespread exposure to the construction industry, supporting your professional development. I've been given a wealth of opportunities to get involved in different construction sectors and gain hands-on experience. Collaboration is key to our organization's culture, meaning you'll be continually supported throughout your career. You can draw on the knowledge and expertise of your colleagues to improve your skillset and confidently accept new challenges.

Gaining chartered status is a key career aspiration of mine. Akins Realis stood out to me as an employer because of the unrivaled support they provide to their employees undertaking the assessment of professional competence. The process of gaining a chartership can be stressful and challenging, so knowing that AtkinsRéalis had achieved a 100% employee pass rate in the RICS assessment of professional competence put my mind at ease that I would be capable of achieving my ambition. Access to mentorship, study groups and training programs at AtkinsRéalis helps employees obtain the necessary experience and knowledge to become chartered in their sector.
