Overview
We are seeking an Associate Director Environment (Dublin) to join our growing Environment team with AtkinsRéalis. We are one of the world's leading providers of engineering professional consulting and support services with offices across Ireland. This is an exceptional opportunity to work with a major multidisciplinary engineering consultancy that specialises in aviation, water, energy and transportation infrastructure across Ireland.
In this role, you will lead strategic transport and environmental projects for significant projects across Ireland. You will have an excellent working knowledge of the Irish planning system and legislation. You will be able to provide expert guidance on sustainable transport solutions, environmental compliance, and integrated planning strategies to accelerate program delivery for our clients. You will lead the environmental aspects of high‑visibility projects with significant scope, risk and resource requirements—delivering outcomes that shape mobility, sustainability and environmental resilience.
Your role
- As an Associate Director Environment and Transportation, you will assume a leadership role on large and complex multi-disciplinary transportation projects primarily on rail but also roads, greenways etc.
- Ensure compliance with national/EU legislation and guidance, including the EIA Directive, the Department of Transport's Transport Appraisal Framework and TII guidelines.
- Coordinate and review complex planning applications, EIARs, Natura Impact Statements (NIS), Transport Impact Assessments (TIA) and masterplans.
- Lead Strategic Infrastructure/Part 10 planning applications for rail and major transport schemes.
- Contribute to tender proposals, lead bids and win new commissions to expand the business pipeline including contributing to pricing strategy.
- Monitor environmental risks through planning phases and implement mitigations.
- You will be able to identify and implement innovative solutions that de‑risk consenting, improve program certainty or elevate sustainability outcomes.
- Have a proactive leadership style with a genuine interest in mentoring and supporting others.
- Work closely and collaboratively with our transportation team including project managers, engineers, the wider environmental team (including GIS, ecology, land liaison team) and your peers.
- Experience in whole‑life carbon management, carbon accounting and sustainability assessments into transport and environmental deliverables would be advantageous.
- Manage project teams including working with the local and wider AtkinsRéalis teams across Ireland and the UK. You will also establish and maintain excellent working relationships with our sub-consultants.
- Strong communication and report writing skills.

About you
- Degree qualified in a relevant science or environmental engineering subject (e.g. environmental science, sustainability, air and climate, noise).
- Masters qualified in a relevant specialism preferred, but not essential.
- Chartered with Engineers Ireland, CIEEM or other equivalent professional institution.
- You must bring experience in a similar consultancy environment and have demonstratable experience in the delivery of multidisciplinary infrastructure projects in Ireland particularly transportation and/or linear infrastructure.
- Specialised expertise across transport planning and environmental assessment, including EIARs and Part 8 applications.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a diverse team, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
- Knowledge of Irish planning legislation and EU directives; experience engaging with An Coimisiún Pleanála and public consultations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary design team, delivery partners team members and colleagues.
- Proven experience in carbon accounting, whole‑life carbon, net‑zero roadmaps and sustainability reporting is preferable but not essential.
- A willingness to develop and build client relationships.
- Full driving license.
