Manchester, Manchester, England, United Kingdom

Overview

We are currently seeking a Senior or Principal Control and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join the Decommissioning market within our Nuclear EMEA business. Ideally based in Manchester although other locations UK wide can be considered.

Reporting to the C&I Capability Lead you will be responsible for leading the delivery of design and substantiation packages for process control and mechanical handling systems, including safety instrumented systems, for nuclear decommissioning and waste management projects.

The successful candidate will have a strong control and instrumentation background and will support the development and growth of the C&I capability in our market. This will include the support to bidding through preparation of project activity schedules and case studies, applying our governance processes to manage technical risk, preparation of project design documentation including diagrams and design substantiation reports, visible leadership in our Nuclear EMEA technical community, and the development of our early career's colleagues.

Our market focuses on supporting the delivery of engineering design for plant life extension, waste retrieval as well as dismantling and demolition projects across their full life cycle including commissioning and operation. We can offer our own products and technology to provide innovative solutions the accelerate the pace of change and provide resource augmentation to support our clients and partners.

We have strong capabilities in the holistic design, assessment and substantiation of assets including process control systems, safety instrumented systems, low voltage electrical power systems and building services. We tackle projects that have varied technical challenges and significant nuclear and conventional safety hazards. Our projects require proactive and collaborative working to brilliantly engineer a cleaner, safer, net zero world.

We continually invest in our people, technology, working facilities and supporting resources to ensure that we strengthen and grow our current capabilities as well as develop new capabilities. This allows us to deliver projects using industry leading and innovative techniques, such as utilising our growing technology solutions and robotics capabilities and showing that our solutions work through active demonstrators.

Your role

  • You will join an established C&I capability in the market, but we are looking for someone who has experience and expertise in Control and Instrumentation Systems to establish a new team in Manchester. The team will complement our existing & well-established core engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Civil & Structural, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation, Process and Systems Engineering) as well as our growing capabilities (Engineering Management, Technology Solutions, and Robotics).
  • You will act as technical lead on projects, managing single discipline teams with little oversight to successfully deliver solutions to complex problems to the agreed cost, schedule and quality requirements.
  • Have a demonstrable understanding of control and instrumentation engineering design across the full project lifecycle. Experience with key control and instrumentation aspects such as control system architecture development and instrumentation specification and selection.
  • Experience or awareness of Process Control Design including Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, model predictive control (MPC), and advanced process control (APC). Awareness of functional safety standards like BS EN 61508 or BS EN 61511.
  • Experience or awareness of Programmable Logical Controller programming and fieldbus protocols. Expertise in electrical design of low voltage (LV) systems and understanding of electrical circuits, EMC precautions, and power supply characteristic.
  • You should be enthused by the opportunity to contribute to the development and growth of the Control & Instrumentation capability within our Engineering group. This opportunity will require working collaboratively with colleagues within the Decommissioning market as well as across the wider AtkinsRéalis business, allowing you to shape and influence methodologies and delivery close to home and wider.
