How can we inspire more females to consider engineering in Singapore?

At the beginning of March, we celebrated International Women's Day, where the theme was recognising women who drive digital innovation and technological advancement, as well as Women in Construction Week, where we acknowledged the contributions of women in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

There has never been a better time for women to consider a career in engineering, especially in Singapore, as the industry evolves and appreciates the insights and perspectives women bring to the table.

Why is gender diversity important in engineering?

Women hold only 18.5 per cent of STEM positions in South and West Asia and 23.4 per cent in East Asia and the Pacific. This statistic illustrates the clear gender gap within roles in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

However, over the years these numbers have been increasing and continue to do so. Gender diversity in engineering brings innovation, new perspectives, and more creative solutions. Bridging the gender gap allows businesses to tap into a new larger pool of talent of skilled professionals leading to better business outcomes.

Empowering female engineers in the workplace in Singapore

The intake of women in STEM degrees accounts for around 25 per cent of the total intake for engineering degrees, according to statics from the Ministry of Education

To increase the number of women pursuing engineering, we need to empower young girls to pursue STEM subjects to develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in engineering such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

Singapore is making an active effort to empower young girls and female engineers by offering them the support they need to excel in their careers. The Singapore Committee for UN Women has launched a program where young girls are offered mentorship and educational opportunities in STEM-related fields.

There are also several initiatives where female engineers are able to network, attend conferences and leadership workshops, and have mentoring opportunities. Some organisations even offer financial support for female engineering students.

What to expect as a female relocating to Singapore

Singapore is a very clean and safe city with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. It also has a world-class healthcare system with excellent facilities and services.

It is a multicultural city with a lot of diverse people. You'll have the opportunity to meet a lot of different people from all over the world in and out of the workplace.

In your downtime, you will have plenty of activities and attractions to choose from such as the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa Island and so much more.
