How AtkinsRéalis embraces a flexible working culture: Vitória’s experience

What is flexible working at AtkinsRéalis?

At AtkinsRéalis, we believe in the power of flexibility to create a supportive and productive work environment.

As an Employer of Choice in the UK, we welcome flexible working requests from day one. And with so many different options, we can keep it grounded in mutual respect, team well-being, and client commitments.

We offer a range of flexible working arrangements including:

  • Part-time: Work fewer hours while maintaining a work-life balance, like Sarah, who works four days a week to also focus on her studies.
  • Term-time: Enjoy flexibility during school holidays, an option popular among our parent-employees.
  • Job-sharing: Split your role and responsibilities with another colleague, offering you both diverse insights and availability.
  • Flexi-time: Start and end your day at times that suit your lifestyle, just like Raj, who begins his day early and ends early.
  • Annualized Hours: Schedule your yearly hours to balance busy periods and personal downtime.

Today, we're excited to share the journey of Vitória, one of our talented cost managers, who has thrived in our flexible work culture.

Vitória's start at AtkinsRéalis

After graduating in 2015 from Brazil in Civil Engineering, I decided to broaden my horizons and skills. In 2018, I moved to Ireland to study English, aiming to enhance my CV.

By the end of my studies, feeling more confident, I embarked on my job search as an engineer. In February 2020, I landed my first role in cost management and controls in Dublin.

Over four years, I worked on a diverse range of projects, including pharma, heritage building refurbishments, and railway systems. This experience was enriching, but in 2024, I felt ready to take the next step in my career."

Joining AtkinsRéalis Ireland

"In March 2024, I proudly became the first member of the complex Infrastructure team in Ireland as part of AtkinsRéalis' growth strategy.

As a Cost Manager, I handle estimates and cost control for transportation, aviation, water, and other specialities.

Our team is involved in all project phases, from concept to handover, ensuring comprehensive and efficient project management."

Why Vitória chose AtkinsRéalis

"One of the primary reasons I joined AtkinsRéalis was its commitment to flexible working.

The company understands that employees have diverse needs and responsibilities outside of work and actively supports a balance between professional and personal life. This flexibility is not just a policy but a core part of the company culture."

Flexible working: a core value

"From day one, AtkinsRéalis has ensured that I could enjoy a flexible work culture. The ability to choose my working hours helps me avoid rush hour traffic, making my commute smoother and my day more productive.

As an early bird, I can start my day early, focus better, and still have time for personal appointments and activities."

Balancing work and family life

Balancing work and family life

"One of the major perks that attracted me to AtkinsRéalis is the ability to work from Brazil for up to 20 days a year.

With my family back home, this flexibility allows me to stay connected with my loved ones while continuing my professional journey.

This international flexibility is a testament to AtkinsRéalis' understanding and support for its employees' personal needs."

A supportive and inclusive environment

"As a woman in the construction sector, my journey hasn't been without challenges. I also worried about being judged for my accent and language barriers.

However, from my interview onward, I felt welcomed and valued at AtkinsRéalis.

The company's global presence brings together people from various countries, religions, and backgrounds, fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect."

Making an impact at AtkinsRéalis

"As part of the new complex infrastructure team in Ireland, I'm thrilled to work on innovative projects that positively impact people's lives.

The thought that our work will be remembered for decades motivates me. Additionally, I look forward to growing into roles that align with my aspirations and eventually mentoring and inspiring the next generation of professionals."

At AtkinsRéalis, we are committed to creating a flexible and inclusive work environment where employees can thrive both professionally and personally.

If you're looking for a place where you can grow your career and enjoy a supportive work culture, find a role with us today in our Project & Programme Services team or learn more about our flexible working culture.
