My rapid career progression and professional growth across engineering roles at AtkinsRéalis.

Hello. I'm Ravikumar from AtkinsRéalis' Global Technology Centre (GTC) in India. As I write this, I've been with AtkinsRéalis for about seven years. I started as a Grade 8 designer and have progressed to Grade 12 Associate Technical Manager. If you're looking for rapid career progression stories and professional growth opportunities—read on:

How I joined AtkinsRéalis

In September 2016, my friend Prakash called me and asked me a few everyday questions: "Are you familiar with MicroStation? Would you be interested in a contract job with AtkinsRéalis?

I said, "Sure!!" Soon after, I started working here as an independent consultant. My contract ended on New Year's Eve, and I returned to a permanent role in the New Year!

My early projects and achievements

When I first started, I was assigned to a Purple Line project called the Fixed Transformation Network (FTN), part of the AtkinsRéalis North America initiative. It was exciting because it was our first time using Bentley's subsurface build engineering software. After training, I was the only one in the group who really mastered it, so I led the team. We delivered the project successfully, and the client was very pleased with the results. These early successes paved the way for more advanced BIM management roles in AtkinsRéalis India.

Professional growth and support

My journey at AtkinsRéalis has been all about continuous upskilling. In today's corporate world, staying current is crucial. I've had great support from peers and mentors like Prakash, Yogesh, Shankar, and Murali. The management, including Oscar, has been especially supportive, particularly with our work on AtkinsRéalis Academia. I'm genuinely grateful for this ongoing support—it's been key to my development and success.

Project contributions and leadership

Since then, I've worked on a variety of projects. I've done 3D modeling for a project in Denmark, led UK CAD for RIP, A2BE managed CAD for the EWR2 Offline Highway, and served as BIM Lead for ERDSC and A57. Last February, I took on the role of BIM Coordinator for the M25J10 utility design project and am now the Utility Design Lead. Recently, I've also been working as an Information Manager on the A66 project for GTC. It's been a diverse and rewarding experience, and I'm excited for what's next!

Certifications and achievements

When I first joined AtkinsRéalis, I wasn't familiar with ProjectWise, a vital tool for managing project data and solving BIM challenges. It took some time to get up to speed, but once I did, I realized how crucial it is for streamlining information. I even won the ProjectWise Championship!

I've also earned several certifications and accolades at AtkinsRéalis. Externally, I'm an ICE-accredited engineering Technician, a Bentley-accredited MicroStation User, and a Bentley Premier Scholar in OpenRoads Designer. Internally, I've been certified as an Information Manager and completed ISO 19650_1 and 19650_2 assessments. I'm also proud to have received the Excellence Award in Digital Solutions, the ACE Initiative of the Year Award, and the Lean Rewards & Recognitions Award.

Work-life balance and support

Managing work and personal life, especially with a one-year-old baby, is not easy. The support from my family members has been invaluable. At the same time, the support I receive from AtkinsRéalis has been awesome. The flexible time and understanding from my managers have allowed me to achieve certifications and enjoy my young family. AtkinsRéalis is always there to help and guide me through difficult times. This balance is key to thriving in BIM management roles in India.

Recognition and team leadership

I've managed over 35 BIM staff and served as Information Manager and AIM Digital Champion for the TRPT BIM project. I led the BIM Aspire to Excel Program, was part of the GTC Bentley Steering Group, and trained over 300 graduates in Civil 3D Certification. Winning the ProjectWise Championship was a major milestone, and I continue to be involved in interviews and visits for GTC BIM staff, providing exciting engineering job opportunities in India.

Looking forward

My journey with AtkinsRéalis has been unimaginable. I started as a contract employee and am now in this position. I'm so happy and proud—all thanks to my amazing colleagues at AtkinsRéalis.
