Hello. I'm Keith, a quantity surveyor in Project & Programme Services in London. At the time of writing this, I've been working on the Network Rail East Coast Digital Programme as the commercial manager leading the Network Rail Business Change Sector and Traffic Management.
When life throws you a curveball...
After graduating in surveying from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I worked as a graduate quantity surveyor at one of the major Hong Kong contractors. I managed commercial and contractual activity for one of the city's largest building projects. I was also pursuing my passion—training as a commercial pilot.
Life was great! But...
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Many of my plans were held off. I decided to use my precious time to look for attractive overseas opportunities. I was soon referred to AtkinsRéalis.
How my team helps me feel at home
AtkinsRéalis's inclusiveness and collaborative culture set it apart from other employers. Even though I didn't grow up in the UK or study here, I never feel isolated. The support from senior leaders and colleagues boosts my confidence. Despite being on a full-time client secondment, I still feel strongly connected to the AtkinsRéalis team. My colleagues are always ready to share information and help me overcome challenges.
Now, I'm engineering a better future.
I am working on the programme to upgrade the East Coast Main Line to digital signaling, laying the foundation for many future improvements across the network. Digital technology is expected to make railways greener by eliminating the need for extensive physical trackside equipment and allowing trains to travel at maximum speed. Deploying the Traffic Management System will quickly resolve train timetable conflicts during service disruptions, ensuring more punctual and efficient train services. It's definitely a revolutionary project.
My most rewarding achievement to date
After a senior team member left, I stepped up on a project as commercial lead, taking on the mission to resolve multiple commercial challenges. After working tirelessly around the clock with the team to implement innovative solutions, we resolved a critical issue before it could impact the project. That is the best feeling so far, and I'm proud to be a Network Rail Business Change Sector commercial lead.

With the international remote working scheme, I can visit my home country to see my parents occasionally and not miss out on important family occasions. Hybrid working lets me spend more time and energy on my fitness training and hobbies instead of commuting. I am confident I am now in the best shape and mental health I have ever been.
