A global HR success story: Lilly Nguyen's inspiring journey

When you think of human resources, you might not immediately associate it with globe-trotting adventures, immersion in new cultures, or a dynamic path of continuous growth. But for Lilly Nguyen, Senior Manager of Human Resources at AtkinsRéalis, her career in HR has been nothing short of extraordinary. From her beginnings as a graduate in Perth, Australia, to leading HR teams across multiple countries, Lilly has exemplified resilience, adaptability, and a dedication to developing others.

From Australia to the world

Lilly's HR journey began in Australia, where she developed a strong interest in how people think and connect. Fascinated by workplace dynamics and emotional intelligence, she found HR to be the ideal space to explore the psychology behind human behavior—often joking, "I probably should've studied psychology!"

Her passion for experiencing different cultures also shaped her career aspirations. With a love for travel and exploration, Lilly saw HR as the perfect field to marry her professional ambitions with her personal love of diverse experiences.

Starting her HR career at AtkinsRéalis in Perth, Lilly joined as an HR Graduate. Her decision to work for the company was driven by its culture of nurturing talent, its ample opportunities, and the global scope of its operations. Little did she know, this role in Perth was just the first step in an extraordinary global career.

Thriving across five countries

Over the past 14 years, Lilly has built her career within the AtkinsRéalis family, working across five different countries, each experience presenting fresh challenges, opportunities, and invaluable learning moments.

She recalls her years in Darwin, Australia, where she worked as an Employee Relations and Industrial Relations Advisor on construction projects. "I felt like my growth was expedited during that time. Being on-site meant starting work at 6 a.m. in full construction gear!"

But her curiosity and ambition didn't stop there. From Darwin, she moved on to Dubai and Abu Dhabi as a Senior HR Advisor, followed by roles in Oman, Qatar, and now Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Each move reflected a step forward in her career progression, with new responsibilities and leadership opportunities at every turn.

"I've been fortunate that each role has provided growth and a chance to step outside of my comfort zone," Lilly says.

Life in Saudi Arabia

Currently based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Lilly finds herself thriving in a place she describes as both surprising and welcoming. "The hospitality of the people, the culture, and the warmth of the environment were so authentic. When you hear about Saudi Arabia on social media, it may scare you, but the reality is, it's one of my favourite places I've lived."

What truly stands out for Lilly is how Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 encourages knowledge transfer between expats and local talent. One of her proudest achievements has been developing Saudi nationals within her HR team, mentoring them, and seeing them grow into leadership roles. "Mentoring talent and watching them succeed—I take great joy and pride in that," she reflects.

Power of adaptability

For Lilly, personal and professional adaptability has been key to her remarkable career. "One of my proudest moments is being able to live in different countries and adapt to each one's unique culture," she shares. "Every country has its own challenges, but they've all taught me something different."

When asked about her favourite country, Lilly smiles and replies, "All of them. Each place has something special. From the warmth of the people to new landscapes to explore, I couldn't possibly pick just one."
