Tips for career growth in technology and engineering with Sean Tse

Mechanical engineering is recognized as one of the most diverse and impactful fields, constantly shaping innovations across industries. At AtkinsRéalis, professionals like Sean, a BIM (Building Information Modeling) Manager in our Hong Kong office, embody how the realm of mechanical engineering continues to evolve through digital transformation and innovation.

Sean's story not only provides inspiration but also highlights how career growth, technology, and collaboration can come together to create impactful professional journeys. Here's an inside look at Sean's path, his advice, and how AtkinsRéalis has supported his growth.

Tips for career growth in technology and engineering with Sean Tse

From engineer to innovator

Sean's professional background is rooted in over ten years in the engineering field. Early in his career, he recognized the challenges of traditional project execution methods and felt compelled to find better solutions. This realization led him to explore the potential of digital tools and data management processes.

He made a pivotal move from a purely technical engineering role into a leadership role that emphasizes BIM and information management. Sean is deeply motivated by the efficiency, collaboration, and successful outcomes that digitalization brings to projects. His enthusiasm extends beyond work—his love for motorsports, especially Formula 1, fuels his passion for teamwork, innovation, and strategic thinking, aspects he seamlessly integrates into his daily role.

Advice for tech industry beginners

For those starting in the tech-driven fields of engineering or BIM, Sean suggests:

1. Stay current: The technology landscape evolves rapidly. Regularly update your knowledge and skills to stay competitive.

2. Adopt technology pragmatically: Understand the limitations of different tools and approaches to choose the most efficient solutions.

3. Learn continuously: Explore how emerging technologies can be integrated into everyday processes.

4. Focus on collaboration: Collaboration is key to extracting the full value of digital transformation.

Innovating with BIM

A common misconception about BIM is that it is solely a tool for creating 3D models. Sean addresses this by explaining that BIM is, in fact, an integrated process that systematically manages project data across the entire lifecycle of buildings or infrastructure. By focusing on effective information management, Sean and his team ensure smoother collaboration and deliver high-quality results to clients.

One standout achievement for Sean was contributing to a project that received the Gold Award from the Hong Kong Institution of BIM (HKIBIM). His leadership in supporting designers and ensuring seamless collaboration elevated project delivery standards and earned AtkinsRéalis client appreciation.

Demystifying mechanical engineering misconceptions

Despite its pivotal role in modern innovation, mechanical engineering is often misunderstood. For instance, many think BIM is just about creating 3D visualizations; however, as Sean states, BIM is a holistic process of managing data to improve efficiency and decision-making.

Furthermore, mechanical engineers are sometimes assumed to only work on machinery. Yet, their expertise spans industries like healthcare, renewable energy, and infrastructure—sectors that directly address pressing global challenges such as sustainability and energy efficiency.

Tips for aspiring and current engineers

Sean highlights the importance of self-reflection and proactive communication. He encourages employees to:

  1.  Analyze their work processes and seek ways to enhance efficiency.
  2.  Share ideas openly, even if they seem unconventional—this often sparks innovation.
  3.  Stay informed and adapt to emerging technologies.

A collaborative culture fostering growth

Since joining AtkinsRéalis nearly two years ago, Sean has experienced a workplace culture that prioritizes innovation and growth. Central to this culture is Idea Hub, a digital platform that encourages employees to present ideas and challenges in their work. The company funds and supports ideas that have the potential to improve efficiency and processes, empowering employees like Sean to make meaningful contributions.

Building knowledge and strengthening skills

Sean attributes much of his growth to the learning culture at AtkinsRéalis. Global Technical Networks (GTNs) facilitate the sharing of expertise and best practices across the company. Networks such as Digital-Data Intelligence, Digital-Technology Solutions, and Information Management & BIM ensure that employees stay updated on emerging trends and technologies.

Additionally, with access to resources like LinkedIn Learning and Pinnacle Series, employees have a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. Sean actively uses these tools to stay ahead of industry trends and continually hone his skills.

Why join AtkinsRéalis?

If Sean's story resonates, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what AtkinsRéalis offers. Here, a culture of innovation, recognition, and continuous development ensures employees are empowered to achieve their full potential. By tackling real-world challenges with cutting-edge solutions, AtkinsRéalis sets the stage for its employees to make a tangible difference. Click here to explore engineering roles at AtkinsRéalis.
