Graduates: Here's how I found variety, challenge, and real leadership opportunities in asset management.

Hi, I'm John – Practice Director for Asset Management at AtkinsRéalis. Asset management is about helping our clients get the best long-term value from their infrastructure – highways, rail, energy systems or public services. My role involves working with teams to shape more innovative strategies, solve technical challenges, and ensure we invest time and resources in the right places.

I've been fortunate enough to work with brilliant people, lead exciting projects, and learn a lot, sometimes through tough experiences. Like many people, I didn't always have a grand plan for how my career would unfold. But I started to build momentum by putting myself out there, backing my strengths, and stepping up (even when it felt uncomfortable). And one simple habit? I never turn up to a meeting unprepared. Over time, I've managed to grow a career that feels right.

How to grow in graduate asset management careers

Here are six things I've learned that might help you, too.

1. How to stand out in an asset management graduate scheme?

For me, career growth has come from building a strong network – and a bit of luck. I think of every project, deliverable, or conversation as a job interview. I try to leave a positive impression and show what I'm capable of so that people remember me when new opportunities come up.

Networking has played a crucial role in that. Attending events, joining professional groups, and connecting with colleagues have helped me build relationships that led to new opportunities. I also try to stay proactive – taking on challenging projects that showcase my ability. We're all about helping you build those connections.

2. Finding your fit in UK engineering graduate schemes

Work out which parts of your work excite you the most and pursue them with unrelenting passion. If you're more technical than people-focused, embrace it and become famous for it. You don't need to become an 'aggressive negotiator' or a 'jazz hands' type to grow your career. We need all kinds of thinkers and personalities in the workplace. How we help you thrive as YOU.

3. Choosing graduate jobs in asset management that align with your goals

If you're not quite where you want to be yet, keep learning by surrounding yourself with mentors and colleagues who will support and challenge you. If you can find a genuinely fulfilling role, you'll exude confidence, and others will be attracted to you. And you'll discover opportunities everywhere. Here are some projects our graduates have been involved in.

4. Communicate upwards – don't hide from your manager

This took me a while to learn. Early in my career, I had the misguided belief that keeping my head down and staying off my boss's radar was the best approach. I assumed that if I didn't bother them, they wouldn't bother me.

But I discovered that this was actually holding me back. Eventually, I started to notice that colleagues who moved up the career ladder quickly were those who communicated well with their bosses and made their strengths known. Now that I'm a Director, I really appreciate it when younger, early-career staff approach me directly to ask questions or share opinions.

5. What early graduates can learn from setbacks in infrastructure consultancy?

I have led a couple of projects that have gone horribly wrong. While the cause of the problems was outside of my control, I was the unfortunate person held responsible. It's a cliché, but these sorts of experiences do make you stronger.

You can keep your integrity and stay calm even when things go wrong. My inner voice says, "Don't panic. It's not your fault. Step back, think logically about the situation, and keep doing all the right things." People around you will remember how you handled yourself – not just the outcome. Being resilient, staying solution-focused and leaning on your team when needed will serve you well. Learn how we stay mentally and physically strong together.

6. Finally, leave that comfort zone for new challenges

At AtkinsRéalis, you'll never be set up to fail, so you can be brave. Everyone on the team is ready to help and wants to see you succeed. Some opportunities might scare you. Put your hand up anyway. Share your ideas. That's how you get noticed, build your network, and take your career wherever you want to go.
