Omaya Alaedine

Hello, I'm Omaya, a Project Engineer at AtkinsRéalis. I work on sustainability-driven projects, using my chemical engineering expertise to design innovative solutions. Recently, I contributed to a net zero aviation fuels study, tackling real-world challenges in energy and infrastructure.

What has been your favorite experience on the Chemical and Process Engineering Graduate Scheme?

Working on a net zero project in collaboration with another consultancy and cross-functionally with the infrastructure department and airport planning team. The project was the Keflavik Future Fuels study for Keflavik Airport in Iceland, aimed at making its airplanes run more sustainably. Therefore, against a short timescale, I was involved in the supply-side analysis phase of the project, which included supply capability mapping per fuel type. The deliverables were researching electrolysis, hydrogen technologies and electrical production, design calculations (H&MB) for electrical, water and fuel needs and report writing. It was an exciting project utilizing my chemical engineering knowledge with a great real-world impact.

What are the things you love most about your team #InsideAtkinsRéalis?

What's your best piece of advice for new graduates?

Having a sense of direction is important, but life rarely goes in a straight line. Set clear long-term goals, but be prepared to adapt as new opportunities arise. Flexibility and adaptability will help you navigate the twists and turns of your career. In addition to being open to new experiences, there is so much to learn and develop, so try new things and take on challenges that will help you learn and grow. 

How do you make the most of the flexible working culture?

I can balance my professional responsibilities with personal needs here at AtkinsRéalis. For example, during the holy month of Ramadan, I use the hybrid working policy to make it easier to balance work with fasting, which includes working from home more when able and adjusting my hours slightly to fit my peak productivity. Another flexible working policy is the flexible bank holiday, which is helpful for individuals who celebrate other faith-based days and do not mind working during the standard bank holiday days. 

What attracted you to AtkinsRéalis, and why do you stay?

I was drawn to the commitment to innovation, sustainability, and making a tangible difference through engineering. AtkinsRéalis is involved in exciting, high-impact projects across various sectors like infrastructure, energy, and the environment. This aligns with my desire to be part of meaningful and transformative work.
