Discover Jeremy Lee's inspiring career at AtkinsRéalis, where he grew from graduate to leader, contributing to major infrastructure projects like the HKIA 3RS.

Engineering is more than just a profession; it's a calling. Jeremy Lee, a Chartered Civil Engineer at AtkinsRéalis, reflects this passion and determination in his inspiring career trajectory. Starting as a graduate, Jeremy has spent the last seven years shaping his career while contributing to some of the most iconic infrastructure projects in the world. His story highlights the paths and possibilities that exist at AtkinsRéalis for engineers eager to grow, collaborate, and make an impact.

Building the foundation for excellence

From graduate to leader: Jeremy Lee’s journey at AtkinsRéalis

Jeremy Lee graduated with a Master of Engineering degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford in 2017. Shortly after, his career began in Hong Kong where he joined AtkinsRéalis as a Graduate Engineer in January 2018. Seven years later, Jeremy is now a Chartered Civil Engineer leading a team of emerging talent. His growth from graduate to leader exemplifies the invaluable opportunities available at the company.

Taking on major projects at AtkinsRéalis

Jeremy's contributions at AtkinsRéalis have been nothing short of remarkable. One of the standout projects he works on is the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Three-runway System (3RS) development project, managed for the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). The expansion will allow the airport to handle an additional 30 million passengers a year. The growth plan of the HKIA began with the reclamation of approximately 650ha of land towards the north of the airport.

Jeremy is also involved in several critical infrastructure projects for Hong Kong's government, such as upgrading sewage collection and treatment facilities for the Drainage Services Department (DSD). These large-scale projects reinforce the importance of civil engineering in supporting vital community systems.

A memorable experience that shaped his confidence

Some moments in one's career leave a lasting impression, and Jeremy recalls one such incident early in his time at AtkinsRéalis. Just six months into the job, he prepared a presentation deck for a client meeting, expecting to support rather than lead the discussion. But unexpectedly, Jeremy found himself presenting on behalf of his team. While initially nervous, his preparation and effort paid off, earning recognition from the client and his colleagues.

This experience was pivotal, teaching Jeremy that his senior leaders recognized and trusted his capabilities. "It made me realize that our team leaders observe us and give us opportunities to grow, showcase our skills, and build confidence," he shares.

Evolving as a leader

Jeremy's role at AtkinsRéalis has evolved significantly since his first day as a Graduate Engineer. Initially, he tackled foundational tasks like engineering designs, calculations, and drawings. Over time, he expanded into design management, commercial responsibilities, and project management. Today, he leads a team of graduate engineers and interns, passing on his knowledge while empowering the next generation of engineers.

Fostering a collaborative culture

When asked about the company culture, Jeremy highlights the openness and inclusivity at AtkinsRéalis. "There's no hierarchy here. I can easily talk to anyone in the office about anything without worrying about 'disturbing the boss.'" He even recalls casually catching up with the company's CEO, a testament to the accessible and supportive atmosphere.

Collaboration is more than just a value at AtkinsRéalis; it's a daily practice. Jeremy shares how his team successfully coordinated with multiple design disciplines to address last-minute changes on the HKIA 3RS project, meeting a strict timeline. It's this collaborative spirit that fosters innovation and ensures project success.

Driving innovation through technology

Innovation is integral to solving complex engineering challenges, and technology plays a leading role at AtkinsRéalis. Jeremy explains how tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM) and a Common Data Environment (CDE) help address underground utility congestion in infrastructure projects. By enabling dynamic design coordination and real-time information sharing, these tools mitigate risks, reduce costs, and minimize material waste. Such advancements in technology exemplify the forward-thinking approach that drives the company's success.

Balancing work and life

AtkinsRéalis places a high value on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Jeremy utilized the company's International Remote Working policy to spend time in the UK with his extended family while continuing his work uninterrupted. During his stay, he visited the London Nova and Epsom offices and connected with global colleagues, further solidifying his sense of belonging within the company's global network.

Advice for engineers and aspiring leaders

Jeremy has plenty of advice for those looking to build a career at AtkinsRéalis. "Try every opportunity you're given to get a taste of different roles and tasks," he says. "It's okay to dislike certain tasks because it helps you discover where your strengths truly lie."

Aspiring leaders should focus on building strong relationships and maintaining open communication. Jeremy himself has participated as a reverse mentor to senior leaders, an experience that allowed him to share ground-level challenges while gaining valuable insights into the company's leadership strategies.

Charting the path forward

Looking ahead, Jeremy hopes to continue leveraging his expertise in airfield design as AtkinsRéalis expands into other regions of Asia. He envisions the company building on its success in Hong Kong and scaling its operations to deliver world-class infrastructure solutions across the continent.
