Our team is looking for graduates with an understanding of electrical engineering, power systems, and energy markets, who are keen to develop their knowledge and make a meaningful contribution to the energy sector. If you’re passionate about shaping a sustainable future and curious about how engineering can support the journey to Net Zero, we’d love to hear from you.

In this role, you’ll be part of a team working on design and advisory projects in the energy sector, with a focus on electricity transmission and distribution networks. You’ll also have opportunities to support projects across the wider Net Zero team and AtkinsRéalis business.

Some of our clients include National Grid, SSEN, and Ofgem, in addition to other organisations both in the UK and internationally. You’ll gain experience delivering multi-disciplinary projects related to research and analysis (such as feasibility studies) and technical and modelling (such as Front-End Engineering Design).

Key duties may involve:

  • Researching topics and collating data to identify recommendations
  • Evaluating transmission and distribution networks for new grid connections
  • Developing designs for substations and electrical networks

In addition to technical work, you’ll also have opportunities to get involved in project management, bidding and potential secondments, offering varied experience both internally and with clients. There are also opportunities to get involved in business development activities, such as the Net Zero Superheroes school competition, or Engineering Net Zero thought leadership.

Our graduate scheme is centred around an ‘every opportunity is your opportunity’ basis, where work is allocated on your interests and availability. We encourage you to explore innovative ways of working, to include digital technologies to enhance project delivery and collaboration. This role offers personal development, training, and support towards chartership, with plenty of opportunity to get involved in a wide range of impactful projects.

Degree requirements: Minimum of a 2.2 or above BEng/BSc in an electrical engineering discipline

Typical locations: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Epsom (Surrey), Exeter, London

Buildings are more than just structures - they’re spaces where people live, work, and thrive. Our Building Services team comes together to make buildings functional, comfortable, and safe, preferably through sustainable engineering solutions where building and site constraints allow. We work closely with our clients to understand how we can work to support them in achieving their Net Zero Carbon aspirations, whether that is providing comfort in the form of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, power and lighting, or ensuring it is safe to occupy through fire safety and security design. Our capabilities include Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Public Health, Sustainability, Building Physics, Fire, Security and ICT, Building Energy Management Systems, Lighting and Vertical Transportation.

As a Graduate Engineer, you’ll collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to deliver world-class projects for our clients. You’ll carry out building services system design from concept design to construction and support in a Technical Advisory (TA) role from construction to completion.

You’ll work using cutting-edge, digitally enabled design processes to produce holistic yet practical solutions that meet the end-user requirements. You will also have opportunities to contribute to applied research and digital development to help create user-centric buildings and places.

You’ll be encouraged to work towards Chartership status with the support of an experienced mentor, developing a full range of competencies set out by the Engineering Council. This will include innovative engineering solutions, technical analysis, preparing reports, contract documents and technical/commercial leadership whilst engaging with clients and project management – preparing you for a future leadership role.

As a Graduate Electrical Engineer within the Building Services team at AtkinsRéalis, you’ll learn to carry out the following activities:

  • Design and specify Electrical Building Services systems including power, lighting, earthing, security, fire, lightning protection and photovoltaic renewable energy systems
  • Conduct detailed calculations using industry standard software and in-house developed tools.
  • Produce design packages, written reports, schedules and supporting documentation
  • Attend site visits and client meetings to support project delivery
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary design teams (e.g. mechanical, public health, architecture, structures) to generate a fully coordinated design
  • Support project management activities and contribute to technical leadership.

As a Graduate Electrical Engineer, you’ll typically work towards Chartership with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE) but we also provide support for those who prefer to become Chartered with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). You’ll also benefit from:

  • 1:1 technical mentoring and on the job training
  • Regular Lunchtime CPDs and Technical Forums will help you develop
