What it means to be a graduate health & safety consultant on real projects

Hello. I'm Caleb, a Graduate Health and Safety Consultant at AtkinsRéalis. In my role, I ensure health and safety considerations are integral across the design, planning, and construction phases of each project lifecycle. I contribute by performing the role of the principal designer in line with the CDM 2015 regulations to develop compliance strategies for diverse projects across Scotland.

What has been your favorite experience?

Implementing the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 on real-world projects. It's exciting to see theoretical knowledge applied practically, ensuring safety and compliance across our diverse range of projects.

What is the best thing about working for AtkinsRéalis?

I'm pleased that I can merge my engineering background with my passion for health, safety, and the environment. This unique blend allows me to contribute effectively to our projects and ensures a safe working environment for everyone involved.

What is your top tip for new graduates?

Embrace continuous learning and stay adaptable. The landscape of engineering and safety is ever-evolving, so keep up-to-date in your field and don't hesitate to explore different fields and interests. Also, don't be scared to show up. They need you just as much in the room!

How has your graduate role at AtkinsRéalis helped you grow?

My role as a principal designer has significantly broadened my understanding of health and safety in construction. It's pushed me to develop strategic thinking and problem-solving skills that are critical in managing the safety aspects of construction projects.

How has the environment at AtkinsRéalis affected your graduate experience?

The collaborative and supportive environment at AtkinsRéalis has been central to my professional development. Working closely with seasoned experts and a diverse team has enhanced my skills and confidence, preparing me for a successful health and safety management career.
