How a Rail Signalling Apprenticeship lets you shape the future of UK transport

I'm Rowen, a Rail Signaling Testing Apprentice in the Transportation team at AtkinsRéalis. I work on new signaling projects across the UK alongside a diverse and talented team in testing. I'm also studying for a Level 3 engineering technician qualification and Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) certification.

What have you enjoyed most about your AtkinsRéalis Apprenticeship?

My experience in my first five months here has been amazing. I get to collaborate with many unique teams in our Transportation, including design, construction, installation and testing. There's been constant progression and opportunities since day one—technically, through earning sought-after qualifications, and professionally, by attending seminars and career events. Every step of the way, I've felt supported by my line manager and the senior leadership team.

What is the best thing about working for AtkinsRéalis?

I have met some wonderful colleagues who are experts in their respective fields and always willing to help me with anything. I have also met great friends. I was one of seven new apprentices who joined the Signaling Testing team this year, and already, within four months, I've made some genuine, long-lasting connections.

What is your top advice for future apprentices?

Immersion is key, learn from everyone around and be proactive, go to conferences, read books and watch videos. Understand not only your job role but also the wider company's inner workings, and you will be able to see your future career path more clearly.

How are you shaping your career goals on projects that interest you?

My main career goal is to be a Tester In Charge (TIC). When I'm on projects, I try to gather a deep understanding of the specific tasks at hand and the project as a whole from conception to delivery. When on a project, I like to exercise my leadership skills to gain practice for my future role.

What industry exposure have you enjoyed as an AtkinsRéalis apprentice?

I've greatly enjoyed writing this profile and a blog about how I got into Real Signalling Testing and filming for #InsideAtkinsRéalis. I also attended an early careers seminar with key speakers on confidence-building and networking methodologies.
