“I discovered a deep love for art”: Sangeeta on nuclear engineering, fusion technology, and finding creativity where you least expect it

Meet Sangeeta, an engineer who discovered a surprising love for art. Read how she blends creativity with her work on global projects.

Sangeeta didn’t set out to become an artist. But through an office engagement forum, she picked up a brush, and something clicked.

“I wouldn’t call myself a great artist yet,” she says, “but I’ve realised that the process of creating is a powerful stressbuster. You don’t have to be an expert at something to find immense value and relaxation in it, sometimes the joy is simply in the process.”

It’s a philosophy that carries into her day job. Sangeeta is a Senior Engineer in the Control & Instrumentation team within AtkinsRéalis’ Nuclear business, based at the Mumbai GTC office. With over 13 years of experience spanning detail and design engineering, process instrumentation, automation, procurement, and on-site commissioning, she’s one of a team of 15 C&I engineers spread across four offices in India, all working on projects for the UK, Germany, and the Middle East.

From factory floors to fusion

The range of work is what keeps Sangeeta engaged. Since joining AtkinsRéalis in 2022, she’s contributed to projects across Net Zero, fusion technology, and nuclear power plants.

“Joining AtkinsRéalis marked my first experience with an MNC, and it has truly been an enriching chapter in my career,” she says. “I feel fortunate to have contributed to cutting-edge fusion, sustainability-driven hydrogen, and strategic nuclear projects. Each one reinforces the idea that the work we do truly matters.”

“There is a unique sense of fulfilment that comes from working on technologies that address some of the world’s biggest challenges. It’s hard to put into words the pride I feel knowing that the tasks I handle every day contribute to a global, lasting impact.”

And the pipeline is growing. The team is gearing up for CANDU projects - complex, high-impact nuclear engineering work that will bring new challenges and new exposure for the engineers involved.

Flexibility that works across time zones

Sangeeta credits flexibility to doing her best work.

“Flexibility is a strong anchor and the main reason I continue working with AtkinsRéalis. Even when you’re working with projects from different regions, be it UK, Germany, or Middle East, everyone is mindful and considerate of the time differences. They create a positive atmosphere to thrive and work in.”

“The hybrid working policy is a boon, especially in times where personal and family priorities need a little extra attention.”

A team worth joining

The Control & Instrumentation team is small but growing, and Sangeeta is proud of how it operates. “We’re a diverse group of 15 skilled engineers guided by a dynamic, strong, and highly capable manager. Despite being spread across four different GTC office locations in India, we maintain excellent collaboration through strong communication and a culture of mutual support.”

Her pitch to anyone considering joining: “If you have the right qualifications, the technical foundation, and the zeal to learn, adapt, and grow, there are exciting opportunities awaiting you.”

Her advice

“In a field like engineering, visibility is everything. By highlighting the career journeys of women, including the struggles they faced and the specific strategies they used, we create a pathway for others. Sharing these stories isn’t just about celebration. It’s about generating the positivity and momentum needed for the next generation to step up with confidence.”
