Starting my nuclear engineering journey: Early experiences shaping my career

Meet Bethan and read how she’s building her career as a Graduate Electrical Engineer working on major nuclear projects at AtkinsRéalis.

I’m Bethan, a Graduate Electrical Engineer in the EC&I Nuclear team at AtkinsRéalis, based in Bristol. Six months into my role, I’ve been working on a building services project for one of Sizewell C’s auxiliary buildings, a fantastic first assignment that’s let me jump into real engineering while still learning every day.

My work involves producing Revit plan layouts and developing electrical schematics that integrate into the wider building design. I’ve really enjoyed understanding how electrical systems fit into the complete nuclear environment and the reasoning behind each design decision.

Because Sizewell C follows the model of Hinkley Point C, I review a lot of HPC documentation but there’s also a strong drive to improve and refine existing designs. Being part of these discussions has shown me how nuclear projects evolve across generations, combining proven solutions with opportunities for innovation. It’s been a solid introduction to electrical design and a great foundation for what’s ahead.

What excites me about the future

Being early in my career means I can explore many different paths within nuclear engineering. While I’m focused on building services now, I’m increasingly interested in control and instrumentation. I covered C&I principles at university, but I’m eager to apply them in a nuclear context.

Right now, I’m building experience; learning new software, understanding nuclear building layouts, and seeing how electrical systems develop from concept to design. But I’m also thinking ahead to projects that will challenge me, broaden my skill set, and help me become an engineer with both depth and versatility.

The industry itself is evolving rapidly: digital tools, innovation, safety, and engineering standards are constantly advancing. Working in a consultancy means I’ll never be limited to one type of work, and that variety is exactly what I hoped for when choosing this field.

What I enjoy most day to day

One of my favourite parts of working in Bristol is the graduates, apprentices, and placement students (GAP) community. There are so many early career professionals here that it feels like a team of its own.

Our monthly GAP forums are a highlight - sessions filled with technical talks, case studies, and guidance on progression and Chartership. Every meeting adds something new to my understanding of the industry.

The social side has been equally important. Moving to a new city immediately after university was daunting, but the GAP socials - pub trips, ice skating, and more helped me settle quickly, build friendships, and avoid the loneliness that can come with starting fresh.

Opportunities that have stood out

A standout experience was the GAP weekend in Manchester, where graduates from across the country came together. Through creative challenges and team activities, I learned a lot about collaboration and working with different personalities under pressure.

What struck me most was how much AtkinsRéalis invests in us, not just technically, but personally. The weekend wasn’t only about developing skills; it was about helping us feel connected, supported, and valued within the wider organisation.

What helps me do my best work

The openness within the team has been invaluable. Even though everyone is working across different nuclear projects, no question is too small, and there’s always someone willing to help. Sitting close to my team makes it easy to talk through problems and learn by doing.

I’ve also benefited hugely from our technical rundown sessions, early career-focused sessions where experienced team members teach us anything from electrical design principles to nuclear‑specific concepts. I’ve already applied what I’ve learned to active projects and even in interviews for secondment opportunities.

The technical challenges are exciting, but it’s the culture of support and shared learning that gives me the confidence to tackle them.
