Join our team as a Health and Safety Manager and play a crucial part in projects of all sizes, scopes and scales. Your Role

  • To provide professional HSE leadership across the Transportation business—driving continuous improvement, strengthening safety culture, and enabling safe, efficient project delivery through collaboration, risk‑based decision‑making, and expert support to the HSE Director and leadership teams.
  • Support HSE Director and leadership teams in the creation, alignment and implementation of HSE plans, ensuring consistency with the Transportation Business Plan and risk profile.
  • Translate corporate HSE strategies (e.g., critical risks, safe by design, leadership expectations) into specific delivery plans.
  • Provide proactive ownership of the Transportation HSE risk profile by analysing emerging risk intelligence, offering clear data‑driven insights to support senior decision‑making, and ensuring all assurance, audit and improvement actions are effectively managed and closed out to strengthen overall safety performance.
  • Act as the HSE point‑of‑contact for key clients within the Market, maintaining strong relationships through regular engagement, transparent communication and active participation in client safety forums.
  • Lead and support proportionate, evidence‑based incident investigations, ensuring findings reflect best practice, drive targeted improvements and support a learning culture.
  • Provide authoritative, solution‑focused HSE advice to project teams, senior leaders and stakeholder groups, enabling safe and compliant delivery while supporting operational excellence.
  • Coordinate the capture, analysis and communication of best practice, lessons learned and industry insights, ensuring effective knowledge flow across. Transportation and promoting continuous improvement.
  • Represent the HSE Director when required, providing leadership presence, supporting strategic initiatives, and maintaining strong engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Champion the AtkinsRealis Safety Management System and associated systems & platforms, building subject matter expertise and ensuring consistent, pragmatic application across diverse project environments.
  • Model and promote a positive, proactive safety culture, demonstrating visible leadership and embodying the behaviours expected of all employees.

About You

Technical:

  • Strong background in HSE management within transport, rail, highways or related infrastructure markets.
  • Demonstrable experience in major projects / transportation
  • Strong knowledge of CDM 2015 duty holder roles and practical implementation.
  • Experience in ISO 45001 systems, audits, and risk-based assurance.
  • Experienced in incident analysis, trend interpretation and risk‑based assurance.

Leadership & Behavioural:

  • Excellent stakeholder and client engagement skills; confident in influencing senior leaders.
  • Proactive, visible leadership aligned to the Transportation HSE behavioural expectations.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to distil complex risk information into actionable insights.

Qualifications:

  • Professional HSE qualification (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent).
  • Chartered membership (CMIOSH) or working toward chartered status preferred.
  • Additional qualifications related to CDM, design safety, behavioural safety or operational risk advantageous.
