P&C Electrical Designer/Lead Designer

Overview

Our Transmission & Distribution (T&D) business delivers end-to-end engineering solutions for power networks, including substations, transmission lines, and grid modernization.

The Protection & Control (P&C) Design team plays a critical role in ensuring the safe operation, monitoring, automation, and protection of power system assets. The team develops engineering designs for 11kV,33kV,132kV,275Kv and 400kV substations, including protection schemes, control systems. Opportunities include working on complex international projects, developing detailed engineering deliverables, supporting multidisciplinary coordination, and driving design excellence through digital engineering tools and industry best practices. This role is ideal for professionals passionate about substation protection and control engineering, electrical system reliability, digital transformation, and delivering innovative solutions for the evolving energy sector.

AtkinsRéalis Global Technology Centre (GTC) is seeking an experienced Electrical Protection & Control (P&C) Lead Designer with 5–10 years of substation design experience and strong proficiency in AutoCAD to join our Bangalore office. This role involves supporting the delivery of Protection & Control engineering and CAD deliverables for 132 kV to 400 kV AIS and GIS substations, covering both greenfield and brownfield projects across domestic and international markets.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing high-quality P&C design outputs, including protection schematics, control and relay panel drawings, wiring diagrams, interconnection diagrams, AC/DC schematics, cable schedules, and Substation documentation. Working closely with Protection Engineers and multidisciplinary project teams, the role requires ensuring compliance with international standards, client specifications, and project quality requirements.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to complex projects across Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution (T&D), Renewable Energy and nuclear sectors, while supporting the digital transformation of substations through modern engineering practices and innovative design solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical understanding of substation protection and control systems, excellent drafting skills, and a commitment to delivering engineering excellence.

Your role

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare Protection & Control (P&C) deliverables for 132 kV to 400 kV AIS/GIS substations
  • Develop SLDs, KLDs, AC/DC schematics, LVAC/LVDC diagrams, tripping schemes, relay wiring diagrams, panel layouts and cable schedules.
  • Prepare interface/interconnection diagrams, terminal block drawings, SCADA/SCS drawings, communication drawings and As-Built documentation.
  • Develop transformer, feeder and busbar protection drawings in accordance with project requirements.
  • Develop Control & Protection Bay Control Drawings, Relay Panel Drawings, DC Distribution Schemes, AC Auxiliary Schemes, RTU/SCADA Drawings, SCS Drawings, LAN/Fiber Network Drawings, Cable Routing & Termination Drawings, As-Built Documentation.
  • Develop and maintain engineering drawings using AutoCAD and other approved CAD tools in accordance with project and client standards.
  • Coordinate with Protection, Primary, Civil, Telecom, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to support project delivery.
  • Support design reviews, drawing updates, revisions, and preparation of As-Built documentation.
  • Perform self-checks and quality reviews to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery of engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure quality assurance and compliance with CAD/BIM standards.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to team motivation.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • We are seeking an experienced Protection & Control (P&C) Lead Designer with:
  • Proven experience in 132kV to 400kV AIS/GIS Substation Protection & Control design for both Greenfield and Brownfield projects.
  • Strong knowledge of protection schemes, control systems, SCADA, SAS, and IEC 61850-based substations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Raster Design; exposure to MicroStation, Revit, or other engineering design tools is advantageous and experience in preparing protection schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, interconnection diagrams, and cable schedules.
  • Good understanding of IEC, IEEE, utility, and client-specific standards related to substation design.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with Protection Engineers, Primary, Civil, Telecom, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience in preparing, checking, and reviewing P&C drawings while ensuring quality, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements.
  • A strong grasp of drawing standards, CAD/BIM protocols, and project workflows.
  • Familiarity with National Grid (UK) standards is a significant advantage.
  • Ability to prepare and check complex drawings, ensuring quality and compliance with CAD/BIM standards.
  • Exposure to international substation projects and utility standards is an advantage.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to mentor junior designers and support project delivery.

  • Experience in 132 kV, 220 kV, and 400 kV AIS/GIS substation Protection & Control design projects.
  • Experience in greenfield and brownfield substation projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; exposure to Raster Design, MicroStation, Revit, or other electrical CAD tools is advantageous.
