Student, Materials Engineering

Overview

Join AtkinsRéalis as a Field Technician, Materials Engineering (Summer Student), and gain hands-on experience supporting infrastructure and construction projects that shape communities. Based in Kingston, Ontario, this role is part of our Materials Engineering team, where you will contribute to field and laboratory testing while working alongside experienced engineering professionals. It is an excellent opportunity to launch your engineering career in a collaborative, safety-focused environment.

Your Role

  • Assist in performing on-site concrete testing, including temperature, air, slump, and casting of compressive strength cylinders in accordance with OPSS and CCIL standards.
  • Carry out sampling and monitoring of construction materials and workmanship for quality compliance.
  • Prepare, collect, and document field samples for laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Perform compaction testing of asphalt and soils using a nuclear densometer as specified by project requirements.
  • Support asphalt and concrete coring activities for thickness and material composition investigations.
  • Monitor paving operations, including material verification, temperatures, lift thickness, and surface conditions, and report findings to clients.
  • Ensure accuracy of test data, prepare quality control reports, and maintain company equipment in good working condition.

About You

  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge from civil engineering or civil engineering technology studies in a practical field environment.
  • Aptitude for working efficiently in a fast-paced setting and managing multiple tasks within defined timelines.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, including clients, subcontractors, and agencies.
  • Valid Ontario driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle, and willingness to work nights, weekends, and variable shifts as required.
