Behind the scenes of hydrogeology: Florent’s story

Building expertise: from training to professional practice

I joined AtkinsRéalis in 2022 as a Project Engineer-in-Training in hydrogeology and geothermal energy, after an academic path deeply rooted in earth sciences: a dual master’s degree in mineral engineering and mining & geology, as well as a bachelor’s degree in geology. My role now allows me to contribute to major projects involving groundwater, geothermal energy, contaminated sites, and environmental monitoring.

At the heart of diverse projects: from drilling campaigns to technical analysis

My work ranges from remote drilling campaigns to in‑depth data analysis at the office, and includes coordination with multidisciplinary teams. No two days are the same.

Some days start before sunrise, out in the field supervising pumping tests, piezometric surveys, or geothermal investigations. Others are dedicated to interpreting data, writing technical reports, or planning projects.

This constant alternation allows me to exercise critical thinking, solve unique challenges, and understand sites from A to Z, from fieldwork to final analysis, while continuing to learn with every mandate.

Navigating variable technical and environmental conditions

In my role, challenges are constant and truly motivating. The natural variability of hydrogeological conditions, managing projects in winter or in remote areas, as well as technical, regulatory, and operational requirements demand strong adaptability. Ensuring impeccable quality and full traceability of data is essential, as this information directly guides decision‑making. It’s this rigor, and the satisfaction of overcoming these challenges, that makes the job so exciting.

Contributing to complex projects, even in extreme conditions

I am particularly proud to have contributed to large‑scale projects, including winter pumping tests in mining environments conducted in temperatures as low as –40 °C. I also took part in the rehabilitation of a hydroelectric power plant dam embankment, a mandate where hydrogeology and civil engineering intersect. These experiences strengthened my adaptability and technical rigor.

AtkinsRéalis: an environment built on trust and talent development

To me, AtkinsRéalis is an environment where you can grow quickly, take part in major projects, benefit from strong technical guidance, and develop real autonomy. The company trusts young professionals and values curiosity, collaboration, and talent development.

A field in full evolution

Technological innovations in hydrogeology and geothermal energy make our work even more exciting: advanced 3D modeling, real‑time instrumentation, improved drilling techniques, integration of predictive data. These advancements allow us to offer more sustainable, accurate, and high‑performing solutions.
