AtkinsRéalis’ commitments to sustainable principles

As the globe becomes more eco-conscious, many people are looking for careers in sustainability-focused companies. In Spring 2024, 80% of people surveyed by the UK government said they were very or fairly concerned about climate change.

No matter whether you're graduating and looking for your passion, a student considering your future career paths, or someone who is already well-established in your chosen field, it's natural to be considering your future workplaces position on sustainability and "How can we be more sustainable?".

At AtkinsRéalis, our mission is to engineer a better future for our planet and its people. We believe that sustainability is a way of working that reduces the impact that our activities have on the environment, society, and economies at global and local levels.

If you've been looking into either a graduate scheme, apprenticeship, or placement with us, you might be wondering how we practice sustainability in all that we do. We're always thinking "What does it mean to be sustainable at work?" and this factors into all our projects and initiatives.

Read on to find out five ways AtkinsRéalis practices sustainability so you can find out more about the values we embody in our projects that you can expect to find when working here.

1. Our ESG strategy

Throughout AtkinsRéalis, our teams are driven by our purpose to engineer a better future for our planet and its people. We believe that ethical and sustainable growth is essential to our business success. Driven by our purpose to engineer a better future for our planet and its people, we are committed to maximizing our impact through our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts.

We have taken steps to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions with a bold Net Zero target by 2030.

With our ESG strategy, we are committed to setting an example for businesses worldwide to showcase how our ESG principles are seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our operations and client's projects.

2. Empowering our employees on their sustainability journeys

We are constantly seeking new ways to be sustainable in the global projects we work on

Whether it's tackling climate change with innovative and groundbreaking solutions or engineering state-of-the-art transportation, we make sure to merge ingenuity, knowledge, data and technology to uplift communities and drive a better tomorrow.

We care about empowering our teams. It doesn't matter if you're on a placement, graduate scheme, apprenticeship, or work experience, we want to encourage you to come up with your own ideas when it comes to embedding sustainable engineering into the fabric of your work.

3. Climate action and Engineering Net Zero

Engineering Net Zero is one of our core missions at AtkinsRéalis, we strive to lead the engineering industry in achieving Net Zero as fast as possible.

We're uniquely placed to address the challenges that lie ahead and identify the opportunities that will take us towards a carbon-free economy.

Our low-carbon engineering experience enables us to develop solutions for faster decarbonization of businesses, sectors, and regions.

4. Designing sustainable cities and communities

Our Town Planners and Project Managers play a huge part in designing towns, cities, and communities to meet the needs of populations across the globe.

The infrastructure projects our professionals deliver span across transportation, energy, water and environment, building design, and more. They weave sustainability into every project to develop a vibrant ecosystem of people, programs, and places.

5. Delivering solutions for affordable and clean energy

With our decades of expertise, engineering capabilities, and understanding of the entire energy system, we look to deliver solutions for nuclear, hydro, renewables, and energy storage.

Our teams practice sustainability by building and utilizing intelligent networks and systems to enhance the capacity to create clean energy.
