Starting a Digital Engineering Career in Brazil

My journey into software development: How one opportunity changed everything.

Hello, my name is Guilherme. I joined AtkinsRéalis Brazil at 21, not knowing how much that first step would shape my future. I was new to the job market and still working toward my degree in Control and Automation Engineering when I joined as a Planning Intern – and from day one, I felt like part of something bigger. The team welcomed me with open arms and made it clear they believed in me.

I put myself forward for every opportunity that came my way. And, before I'd even graduated, I was hired as a Technical Planning Assistant. That role gave me the experience and confidence to take on something new – and that's when I made the move into the Digital Engineering team.

Guilherme

How do you start a career in digital engineering at AtkinsRéalis

Now I work as a Solutions Developer. I design software to automate repetitive tasks, connect different disciplines, and help make our projects smarter and more efficient. But it's not just the tools or the dashboards that have shaped my journey – it's the people. I'm surrounded by people who are happy to teach each other, without expecting anything in return.

What is it like working in a global organization as a graduate?

I soon discovered I wasn't working in just any "company." AtkinsRéalis is a global organization that will see you and recognize your strengths. I've had real opportunities for growth, learning, and collaboration with professionals around the world. From the very beginning, I was included in international meetings and encouraged to explore areas like data science and advanced analytics. In a short time, I've been able to grow as an engineer, problem‑solver, teammate, and communicator.

Can early‑career engineers take part in hackathons in Brazil?

Outside of work, I'm always looking for ways to challenge myself. I've taken part in hackathons focused on mining – a key industry for us here in Latin America – and for three years running, I've come away with awards. It's a great way to apply what I've learned and follow my skills and interests in new directions.

What opportunities are there to grow your career internationally?

Going forward, I've got some big goals. I'd love to deepen my engineering expertise and one day take on opportunities in our international offices. For now, I know I'm in the right place – surrounded by people who support my ambitions and will give me the tools to get there.
