Dhananjay’s secondment story: A new perspective on global projects

What does it take to grow beyond familiar boundaries? For Dhananjay, an Assistant Technical Manager at AtkinsRéalis, a UK secondment brought new challenges, cross‑border collaboration and valuable lessons in global project delivery.

Read on to hear Dhananjay share how the experience shaped his professional journey and the insights he gained along the way.

“Mobility is a powerful way to learn and grow. Be open, adaptable, and proactive in building relationships. Stepping out of your comfort zone boosts confidence, cultural awareness, and leadership skills. If you get the chance, take it. The experience is invaluable”.

My Mobility Journey

I accepted the UK secondment to collaborate closely with the LPO and project leadership on Cernavoda C34, one of the most prestigious and technically complex nuclear projects. This was a chance to broaden my global exposure, gain insight into UK project delivery, and showcase the capability, quality, and reliability of the GTC team.

What I’ve Gained

Working from the Bristol office deepened my understanding of global collaboration, UK workflows, and multidisciplinary coordination.

Leading as the BIM representative for GTC strengthened my leadership skills and ensured seamless communication between UK and India teams. On a personal level, the experience boosted my confidence, enhanced cultural awareness, and helped me build strong professional relationships within the UK office.

Biggest Challenge

Adapting to a fast‑paced project environment while aligning LPO expectations with our delivery model was the biggest challenge.  I overcame this by improving communication loops, taking proactive ownership of issues, and building trust through consistent delivery and transparency, earning highly positive feedback from the project team.

Support Along the Way

I felt extremely supported throughout the assignment. The UK project team, my colleagues, and the LPO provided guidance and fostered an open communication culture. Their trust in my capabilities and the smooth integration into the Bristol office made the transition both comfortable and productive.

Advice to Others

Mobility is an incredible opportunity to accelerate learning and expand your career horizons. Be open, adaptable, and proactive in building relationships. Stepping out of your comfort zone drives both professional and personal growth. If you get the chance, take it. The exposure and confidence you gain are truly invaluable.
