Molly, Assistant Environmental Consultant
As an Assistant Environmental Scientist specialising in working with nature and delivering Nature-based Solutions (NbS) my working life is varied, I undertake site work, office work and collaborative workshops.
My career at AtkinsRéalis began in July 2019 when I joined as a Year in Industry placement student whilst studying for my BSc Geography degree at the University of Leeds. As part of my placement year I undertook natural capital assessments, understanding how the team uses data to quantify the wider benefits to nature. I was also involved in water resource planning, Water Framework Directive assessments and many more projects. This placement year gave me a real taste of what we do here at AtkinsRéalis and at the end of t¬¬¬he year I was quick to snap up a Graduate job opportunity and continue working with the team.
One of the core values here at AtkinsRéalis is innovation this is something which is supported within each project I work on. I embody this value on a day to day basis by working collaboratively with my team to find opportunities to use innovative digital solutions to help solve client needs. I also take opportunities to work more widely within AtkinsRéalis to make use of the fantastic knowledge and skills network across the teams. Recently I have co-developed a AtkinsRéalis tool to quantify the green finance opportunities for nature based solutions. This tool has now been applied to several projects to help clients understand the benefits of green finance.
My favourite part of working here at AtkinsRéalis is the range of opportunities and technical disciplines which I have access to and have been involved with, the learning and development opportunities are endless!”
Avigayil, Town Planner
I have been a Town Planner for five years and with AtkinsRéalis for two years. I currently provide planning and environmental support to a wide range of projects being completed on Sizewell C, a nuclear power station in East Suffolk.
My day-to-day activities vary, and previous tasks have included writing a planning proposal for the creation of new habitats to enhance wildlife and reviewing the DCO requirements relating to environmental monitoring. This variety of work exposes me to a diverse group of professionals and I work closely alongside ecologists, climate change experts, GIS consultants, designers, and engineers. This is my favourite thing about working at AtkinsRéalis. The daily interactions with a wide variety of people with niche technical expertise constantly give you new insights and fresh perspectives.
There are so many different projects within the company that the opportunities to pursue your particular interests are endless. Whether you want to develop discipline-specific technical knowledge or lead on commercial aspects of the business, there are always team members ready to help you meet these aspirations. For example, having expressed interest in working on projects related to ports and piers, I was able to expand my technical knowledge of coastal areas. On a commercial level, I was involved in writing proposals to win and deliver work. This improved my commercial awareness and better understand the costs associated with the different tasks involved in delivering large infrastructure projects.
A highlight of my career with AtkinsRéalis so far was a two-week field trip to Saudi Arabia, where I was tasked with creating a variety of tourist trails demonstrating the potential heritage, history, and nature of the Red Sea Zone, a tourism megaproject in the desert focussed on sustainability. The trip also included a visit to a solar farm which highlighted the level of infrastructure that will be required for the development of the megaproject. This experience allowed me to work on-site with professionals who have a deep understanding of the land's history and heritage and therefore understood how to balance the development with local needs. Additionally, it gave me insight into how planning systems operate in different countries.
The team environment is incredibly friendly, supportive, and fun. Colleagues are always ready to lend a hand, whether it's offering guidance on a project, giving you general career advice, encouraging you to go for opportunities or sharing a laugh during a coffee break. The supportive atmosphere fosters professional development and personal connections, making work both rewarding and enjoyable. Team lunches, trips to the pub and office social activities are a regular part of life at AtkinsRéalis. If you want to work on a wide variety of projects, take responsibility for your own career path and work in a supportive team environment, then I would recommend applying for a role with us.
