Top engineering career advice from an electromechanical degree apprentice

Here's what an engineering degree apprenticeship is really like – and what I've learned along the way.

Hi, I'm Prisha, a degree apprentice at AtkinsRéalis, and I am currently studying electromechanical engineering at the University of Warwick. I'm now one year into the programme and working as a Junior Nuclear Safety Engineer in the Aerospace, Defence, Security & Technology (ADS&T) team. So far, most of my experience has been in nuclear safety engineering, and I'm learning something new every day. Find out more about my team.

Googling engineering career advice? Look no further!

I often post work updates on my socials. Keeping track of my achievements helps me see how far I've come. But I'm also passionate about raising awareness of the brilliant opportunities that degree apprenticeships offer. I've done Instagram takeovers for @Inside_AtkinsRealis and a Day-in-the-Life livestream with Not Going to Uni. So, when I got to write a blog about my apprenticeship, I jumped at it.

Whether you're obsessed with STEM, curious about apprenticeships, or just exploring something completely different... here are my top 4 pieces of engineering career advice:

Join an engineering degree apprenticeship that offers support and variety

The organization's clear focus on ensuring that everyone belongs – and its commitment to making a positive impact – really made me proud to join. From day one, I've felt respected, supported, and encouraged to be myself. I've seen firsthand how having a mix of backgrounds and ways of thinking leads to better, more creative solutions – especially when we're tackling complex challenges. Discover everything you need to know about AtkinsRéalis apprenticeships.

Cyber security to digital technology apprenticeships: work where you can explore it all

Before my apprenticeship, I studied A levels in maths, geology, and physics, along with a Level 3 qualification in financial studies. It's an unusual mix – I've always had diverse interests, so I wanted the chance to explore the possibilities. So, I was drawn to AtkinsRéalis because of the variety of consultancy opportunities across different sectors. There's also such a wide range of projects and pathways in ADS&T.

For example, a coursemate is a Digital Rehearsal Apprentice, working with 4D modeling to help clients visualize nuclear construction through animation – very different from my role. Across the wider team, you'll find apprenticeships in Project Management, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, and Digital Technology. These digital technology apprenticeships offer a range of roles and development routes, depending on what you're passionate about. Meet our apprentices from across our UK teams.

Prioritise hands-on engineering experience

As a junior AtkinsRéalis consultant, a lot of hands-on engineering experience happens on the client site. There's also practical work at university, including lab sessions and summer milling workshops – all great chances to apply what we learn. A highlight for me was being part of our collaboration with Babcock, which gave me the opportunity to visit Devonport Royal Dockyard. I toured a submerged submarine, explored the docks, and spoke with engineering specialists. That experience really brought my learning to life. Here's why more young people are choosing apprenticeships.

Right now, I'm working on a nuclear safety project through METIS, a collaboration with Mott MacDonald. My role involves contributing to technical safety documents by learning independently and speaking with colleagues. It's rewarding work – I know what I'm doing helps keep systems safe and supports people and their surroundings. Discover the caliber of projects our apprentices work on.

Final tip: careers fairs for engineers are a great place to start

If you're interested in engineering but unsure where to begin, try a careers fair. They're packed with opportunities and specialists to talk to – much better than scrolling the web. You'll learn a lot and maybe even find the right path for you.
