Thrive at BOTH! How Mahalakshmi balances leadership and motherhood.

Hi, my name is Mahalakshmi. I'm an Associate Group Data Architect at AtkinsRéalis and a mother of two. I began my career in September 2010 at Infosys before moving on to a longer stint at Mindtree. After that, I joined AtkinsRéalis.

You can be a mother and leader at AtkinsRéalis

I started in a lead role, handling architectural solutions and managing people and projects. I also have two lovely daughters, aged five and two. AtkinsRéalis has been incredibly supportive with flexible work hours, like starting later or handling evening calls from home. Hybrid working lets me work from the client's office, which is closer to home than where my team is in Bengaluru.

Fun Fact: I'd wanted to join AtkinsRéalis for a while!

I wanted to join AtkinsRéalis because of its strong reputation, excellent work-life balance, and projects. The first time I received a call, I was expecting my first child and the second time, I was expecting again. Finally, 10 months ago, the stars aligned, and I joined. I couldn't be happier! The organization also offers great benefits like insurance and generous sick leave policies, which make a real difference compared to my other corporate workplaces.

"Events like Children's Day, where we bring our kids to work, achieve a sense of community—we're like one big family."

Projects I work on

I work with global clients in Microsoft SharePoint, Power Apps, Power BI, and data management technologies. I'm migrating the Capability Hub at AtkinsRéalis to the latest SharePoint version. Phase one is complete, and phase two is in progress. I also recently managed automated scripting projects with a Canadian team. I handled client communication, gathered requirements, and ensured effective developer coordination.

A project I'm proud of

In October, I started updating an older version of our SharePoint governance library. With Microsoft support for the servers ending in December, we had to act quickly. We started with a lift-and-shift migration to ensure server security. Initially, we planned to enhance features post-migration. However, the site contained critical governance documents requiring careful management. So, we focused on migrating existing content and improving security. Despite simultaneously taking on another project role, we streamlined operations and made the December deadline.

My management roles

As the Vox Champion for the digital team, I analyze survey results and focus on three action items each year. We identify areas for improvement, like career and skills development, appointing a point of contact to plan training sessions. We also promote LinkedIn training for team awareness. I've implemented initiatives that have enhanced my understanding of the digital landscape, from Power BI to managing full-stack developers.

I enjoy tasks beyond my core responsibilities, like coordinating monthly digital team meetings, including business or HR updates and WOW Awards. I also manage Employee of the Month and our Global Technology Centre digital community page.

Why I enjoy AtkinsRéalis

How AtkinsRéalis values trust and upskilling to retain employees. I see my colleagues' dedication and enjoy working with experienced professionals. The company is employee-friendly, organizing inspiring sessions with senior women leaders and working towards a diverse workforce.
