“It inspires me to keep breaking barriers”: Lubna on co-owning a restaurant brand, six Persian cats, and a career that moved fast

Discover Lubna’s journey from fresher to subject matter expert in just two years.

Lubna joined AtkinsRéalis as a fresher. Within two years, she’d become the Subject Matter Expert for her team.

That alone would be a story worth telling. But it’s what she does outside of work that makes you realise this is someone who doesn’t do anything by halves.

“I co-own two restaurants under the brand Mandi King, Arabian Cuisine,” she says. “My husband manages the day-to-day operations, and I support whenever I’m off from work. Cooking has always been something I love.”

She’s also a qualified dietitian, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, and has completed an MBA in HR, which is what her career at AtkinsRéalis is built on. And she has six Persian cats at home.

From fresher to subject matter expert

Lubna is based in AtkinsRéalis' Bangalore office, where she oversees daily operations for the global Background Verification team. Her responsibilities include streamlining verification processes, coordinating with international teams, and ensuring compliance with global standards.

But it’s the speed of her progression that stands out. She joined as an Advisor and quickly developed a strong understanding of the process, consistently putting her hand up for more responsibility.

“I was fortunate to have exceptional mentors - Lalitha and Shylaja, who invested time in grooming me and guiding me into roles that accelerated my growth,” she says. “The continuous support and appreciation I received from the UK onshore Vetting Team motivated me immensely.”

“As many of the team members who started with me eventually moved on, I found myself stepping up more and more. All these factors together helped me advance and shaped my journey from fresher to Subject Matter Expert.”

A standout experience has been working on process improvement and innovation streamlining workflows and reducing turnaround times. She also participated in a cross-functional global project that broadened her understanding of how different parts of the organisation work together.

Two careers, one balance

Managing a restaurant brand alongside a corporate career might sound impossible, but Lubna sees the two as complementary.

“This arrangement allows me to maintain a healthy balance between my professional career and my passion for food,” she says. “My role at AtkinsRéalis aligns with my long-term career aspirations after completing my MBA in HR. Managing both allows me to pursue my passion while still building the career I’ve always aimed for.”

Recognition that matters

Ask Lubna what helps her do her best work and she points to something simple: being seen.

“There’s a lot of collaboration between the teams. The UK onshore team provides recognition and appreciation for the work completed, that helps a lot. There’s also support from team leads to work on ideas and innovation, and a lot of appreciation through our #WOW programme and People Hub huddles.”

“The work atmosphere is extremely good. People are very approachable and helpful and provide the right guidance to succeed.”

Always a mentor

Despite being relatively early in her own career, Lubna has already made mentoring a priority.

“I’ve always been a mentor to all the new joiners in my team, not only assisting them with queries but also trying to learn about them apart from work, and try to be a good friend. I’ve witnessed their growth and development, it gives me a sense of fulfilment to know that I could contribute to their development in a fast-paced workplace.”

It’s an approach that reflects someone who remembers what it’s like to start from scratch and wants to make that experience better for the people coming after her.

What International Women’s Day means

“International Women’s Day, to me, is a celebration of strength and growth,” Lubna says. “It’s a day that inspires me to continue striving, learning, and breaking barriers, not just for myself, but for the women around me.”

Inspired by Lubna’s story of growth and resilience? Take your next step with AtkinsRéalis and be part of a workplace where women thrive.
