Our consultancy practice provides a link between Management Consultancy and traditional Engineering Consultancy roles. We specialise in solving the most challenging strategic issues, typically encompassing future business strategies, delivery models, deployment of technology and investment choices across our four specialist teams. The Rolling Stock team offers a unique opportunity for passionate Graduate Engineers to make a significant impact in the rail industry. Our work is varied as we solve complex problems for our clients; you could find yourself carrying out feasibility studies for HS2, advising train operators on reducing carbon emissions, reverse engineering components for TfL or fitting modern signalling systems onto heritage steam trains.

Our diverse and supportive team is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of experts in trains, trams, locomotives, and vehicles, offering a wide range of opportunities for you to become an engineering consultant in a variety of disciplines including mechanical/electrical systems, maintenance management, project engineering/management, systems, and strategy, structural/dynamic simulation as well as engineering design.

You’ll undertake a variety of tasks including:

  • Supporting and leading on-site vehicle inspections
  • Producing technical reports and carrying out technical investigations
  • Present outcomes internally to colleagues and externally to clients
  • Working with our clients directly, understanding their needs and creating the deliverables that will help them
  • Arranging and managing internal and external meetings
  • Producing proposals to help the team win work, including putting together estimates
  • Managing projects, including tracking time and finances

Our Railway Systems Advisory practice provides a link between Management Consultancy and traditional Engineering Consultancy roles. We specialise in solving the most challenging strategic issues, typically encompassing future business strategies, delivery models, deployment of technology and investment choices. As a trusted partner to our clients, we help them by bringing fresh perspectives and challenging established ideas to ensure that the best solution is identified.

Your role: As a graduate you will be exposed to the breadth of our portfolio and develop through a fast-tracked scheme consisting of working on a variety of projects around the business with opportunities available in both the UK and overseas. You will gain experience across the project lifecycle, from project inception, through design, construction and into operations. Within this exciting and varied role, you’ll undertake a variety of tasks including:

  • Supporting our projects at various phases, from research and planning to implementation and reporting
  • Writing technical reports, presentations and other client deliverables
  • Developing structured frameworks for the assessment of options for railway systems solutions
  • Supporting the drafting of specifications and requirements for railway systems
  • Contributing to rail operational and infrastructure planning by conducting desktop and site-based research and producing compelling insights based on this
  • Presenting your work internally, and to clients where appropriate
  • Manage the interfaces between different rail systems disciplines, including planning and coordinating stakeholder engagement workshops
  • Supporting the drafting and management of bids
  • Support in the management of our projects, including reporting and progress tracking

You’ll join us as a Graduate Assurance Engineer contributing to the success of the Safety Engineering and Independent Verification department. You will be working across a range of railway projects funded by private organisations (train manufacturers / train operators) and in the public sector i.e. Network Rail. You will contribute to train rolling stock, infrastructure and signalling projects, managing risk assessments and independent verification reviews by subject matter experts.

You will learn to work with key clients and your colleagues, gaining knowledge of how assets in the railway environment are managed to ensure safe integration and use. In completing client work in the consultancy environment, you will develop confidence, high communication, and problem-solving skills.

Day-to-day duties will include:

  • Supporting clients with long term structured and ad-hoc consultancy advice, presenting critical information on risk management and design conformance
  • Reviewing engineering standards and the specific requirements, referencing the information sent by clients and managing conformance reviews within the department, utilising resources from other departments for specialist subject areas
  • Preparation of certificates of verification to formally acknowledge engineering conformance, delivered by UKAS accredited entities
  • Supporting identification of foreseeable hazards in workshops and developing mitigations using referral to standards, similar systems and engineering arguments, developing complete hazard logs and preparing overall safety justification
  • Support authoring technical reports describing safety processes and verification plans / reports
  • Engagement with subject matter experts to complete technical reviews to support overall decision-making processes within AtkinsRéalis and for clients, to allow for train, station and signalling operations to take place safely and in accordance with legislation
  • You may be required to visit client sites, support presentations, engage in workshops, be involved in asset inspections, to document the approaches being taken to manage safety decisions
  • Support to define and review operational hazards, ensuring operators manage and update their safety management systems and licenses
  • Support the compiling of health & safety bulletins / reports and review safety critical documentation and plans
  • Support in preparation of audit plans and reports, as well asset inspection activities (stations, trains)
  • Engage in business related tasks including project management, proposal writing and preparation of cost estimates
  • Utilising digital tools and platforms to gain hands-on experience with project management and financial controls of projects
  • Being involved in developing existing, and new client relationships, through client satisfaction on deliverables, both in Teams meetings and face to face interactions.
