Explore the dynamic world of infrastructure development

Are you an engineering or science enthusiast, with A-levels or equivalent in mathematics or physical sciences? Do you have an insatiable curiosity?

If so, a rewarding career in civil engineering awaits you. Embrace the dynamic world of infrastructure development, sustainability, and project management through a Civil Engineering apprenticeship.

AtkinsRéalis is a global leader in professional services and project management dedicated to engineering a better future. Here you'll have the opportunity to earn while you learn and gain a valuable qualification, across a range of locations in the UK.

What is civil engineering?

Civil engineering involves creating, improving, and safeguarding the infrastructure that surrounds us. It goes beyond bridges and buildings; it encompasses everything from transportation systems and water supply networks to waste management and sustainable construction.

Civil engineers play a pivotal role in ensuring communities function smoothly by addressing challenges related to urbanisation, environmental impact, and societal needs.

What are some of the top characteristics of a successful civil engineer?

Becoming an engineer involves continuous learning. Whilst there's plenty you can learn and many skills you can develop, there are some key traits you can build to set yourself up for success.

The best engineers welcome change, understanding that progress and improvement often accompany new technologies and perspectives. This helps you face challenges head-on and turn complex scenarios into opportunities for growth and solutions.

Here are some of the top characteristics that will help you thrive as a civil engineer:

Insatiable curiosity:

Engineers ignite innovation by asking how and why, always striving to make things better and more efficient.

Creativity and innovation:

Unique solutions demand creative thinking and constant innovation!

Problem-solving prowess:

Successful engineers tackle challenges head-on, leveraging strong problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles.

Team player mentality:

Collaboration is key; successful engineers seamlessly integrate into teams, understanding the power of collective effort. Learn how Millie's making the most of her apprenticeship through collaborating and connecting with peers and leaders.

Mathematical and analytical precision:

Logical thinking, excellent analytical abilities, and a strong mathematical foundation define the essence of a successful engineer.

Attention to detail:

In engineering, meticulously attending to details will help you uncover errors and foster innovation.

Why choose a Civil Engineering Apprenticeship?

  • Practical learning: Through apprenticeships, you learn by doing. If you're itching to leave a typical school environment and dive into the working world, an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. You're actively involved in real projects, gaining hands-on experience from the get-go.
  • Diverse skill set: Civil engineering apprenticeships expose you to a broad range of skills - from sustainable construction to structural integrity, geotechnics, and more. It's a comprehensive learning journey. Read Mia's story for crucial tips on what to consider before choosing an apprenticeship.
  • Earning while learning: Apprenticeships offer a unique advantage - you earn a salary, plus unique rewards and benefits at AtkinsRéalis, while acquiring valuable skills. This financial independence sets you on a path to a rewarding career.

Understanding the journey to civil engineering degree apprenticeships

You'll need to choose from four levels of apprenticeships and consider which one will suit you best. Read our apprenticeships selection process for a better understanding of the routes available. If you're interested in a Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, delve into some of the key factors:

Entry requirements:

Typically, apprentices have at least three A-levels, including Mathematics and a Physical Science such as Chemistry or Physics.

Alternatively, completing a Level 3 Apprenticeship as a Civil Engineering Technician is a viable entry route.

Duration:

The length of your Apprenticeship can depend on the Level you're studying towards. Typically, it's 2-3 years for Advanced and Higher Level Apprenticeships and 4-5 years for Degree Apprenticeships. Check out our FAQs for more information.

Qualifications:

Successful apprentices that complete a Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship earn a BSc or BEng Civil Engineering Degree accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators. This opens doors to professional recognition!

What to expect:

  • Project involvement: Apprentices actively contribute to projects throughout their lifecycle - development, design, construction, and beyond.
  • Team collaboration: Work alongside experienced engineers and construction professionals, gaining insights into various facets of civil engineering.
