How a Nuclear Degree Apprenticeship lets you transform the future of energy

My name is Christopher. I'm an apprentice in the AtkinsRéalis Nuclear & Power team. I help deliver clean nuclear energy on projects like Hinkley Point C and the H3AT (Tritium Advanced Technology) fusion programme, advancing powerful and sustainable energy solutions. I also help develop specifications and requirements to keep these critical projects running smoothly. So far, I've enjoyed a wide range of exposure here, including helping very senior members of staff detail-check documents and write PowerPoint slides.

Why choose AtkinsRéalis?

I chose AtkinsRéalis because it matches my values. I believe nuclear energy is a key solution for generating renewable, clean energy and should be accessible to everyone. While we struggle to make an impact as individuals, I truly believe that if we all unite with the same goal, we can make a massive difference in the fight against climate change. The apprenticeship program is a great way to build skills while earning a degree in a field I'm passionate about. I'm learning on the job and growing into a well-rounded professional.

What have you enjoyed most about your AtkinsRéalis Apprenticeship?

Everybody in the office has been so kind, friendly, and willing to help in any way they can. My line manager has been incredible in getting me exposed to different aspects of the business, and I am really enjoying my time with the company!

What is the best thing about working for AtkinsRéalis?

There are so many great things about working for AtkinsRéalis. Our working hours are flexible, so I never have to worry if I have to attend an appointment or anything else. Everyone at the organization is so genuine. The culture here really allows you to make work work for you, which is such an important aspect to have in a team.

How are you shaping your career goals on projects that interest you?

I am really interested in nuclear fusion to generate energy. My line manager is helping me get exposure to the nuclear fusion part of the team. I'd like to be involved in generating energy with nuclear fusion in my lifetime as I can see its potential.

What is your top advice for future apprentices?

My top advice for future apprentices is to work hard and say yes! You never know where saying yes can get you. Even if a project or piece of work really doesn't interest you, the team will notice hard work and determination, and eventually, you will get where you want to be. The other advice I would give a new apprentice is to voice your opinions. If you want to work on something specific, your team will support you however they can, even if it's just letting you sit in on meetings, which gets your name out there for when you qualify!

If you're thinking about applying, take the time to make your application stand out. AtkinsRéalis is an amazing place to work, and your time and effort will be rewarded!
