Building strong foundations: Defne’s journey in structural engineering at AtkinsRéalis

I work at AtkinsRéalis as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in building structures, a field I am deeply passionate about. What I love about my job is that it combines technical rigor, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world impact. Every project is built on a simple but essential idea: without a solid structure, nothing stands.

Learning, designing, and building sustainable foundations

I work at AtkinsRéalis as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in building structures, a field I am deeply passionate about.

What I love about my job is that it combines technical rigor, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world impact. Every project is built on a simple but essential idea: without a solid structure, nothing stands.

A journey driven by curiosity and the desire to learn

I joined AtkinsRéalis in the summer of 2025 as a building structures intern. From the very beginning, I had the opportunity to work closely with my team, my manager, and my colleagues on a wide range of technical assignments. These included structural analyses for a hospital, design of concrete footings and columns, and review of steel shop drawings.

At the end of my internship, I felt I had only scratched the surface of the field’s complexity and richness. I decided to continue part-time to deepen my knowledge while completing my studies. During that time, I received an offer to join as an EIT, which I will begin in the summer of 2026 after graduating.

Why AtkinsRéalis?

What drew me to AtkinsRéalis is its balance between global reach and strong local presence in Montréal: a rare combination.

I particularly appreciate the multicultural and collaborative environment, where perspectives are diverse and exchanges are constant. AtkinsRéalis allows me to work in a field I’m passionate about, on large-scale projects, while having a tangible impact in my own city. Seeing the concrete results of your work in the urban environment where you live gives a special meaning to what you do.

Continuous learning, together

What I value most in both my role and my internship is continuous learning. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to grow. And according to my experienced colleagues, learning never truly stops, which is what makes this field so stimulating.

Why start your career at AtkinsRéalis?

For anyone passionate about building structures, as well as civil, mechanical, electrical, or geotechnical engineering, AtkinsRéalis offers a multidisciplinary environment where you can truly push yourself, both technically and in project management.

Starting a career in engineering is challenging. Having access to an experienced, structured, and supportive team makes the transition from academic studies to professional practice much smoother. AtkinsRéalis also actively invests in employee development.

The Canadian Odyssey Program, designed for early-career professionals, provides guidance in key skill areas. The Youth Advisory Initiative (YAI) committee also helps you stay connected to the community through networking activities and social events. These initiatives make a real difference when starting your career.

From theory to practice: a valuable internship experience

My internship allowed me to become familiar with key structural engineering software such as CSI SAFE, ETABS, and SAP2000, as well as Canadian CSA codes and standards. I also discovered how much real-world design differs from academic theory, especially regarding constraints related to cost, construction, and coordination.

I participated in meetings with clients and architects, team discussions, and even a site inspection. This exposure helped me develop a comprehensive understanding of the project lifecycle, an essential perspective that I will carry with me as I officially begin my role as an EIT.

A message to future engineers

Take your structural engineering courses seriously: a strong academic foundation significantly accelerates learning in industry. Get familiar with CSA standards, attend events, connect with peers, and most importantly… complete internships.

An internship allows you to see a project take shape from start to finish, something no textbook can replace. It gave me motivation, discipline, and a clear vision of the type of engineer I want to become.

And most importantly, don’t get discouraged. I personally cried the first time I encountered the concept of tributary areas. I can confirm it was worth it. Structural engineering is demanding, but every effort eventually turns into real competence.
