Developer Platforms Specialist

Birmingham, England, United Kingdom | Bucuresti, Romania | Bangalore, Karnātaka, India

Overview

The Developer Platforms Specialist sits within IT Services at AtkinsRéalis and plays a pivotal role in enabling safe, scalable and high-quality software delivery across the organisation.

The role acts as the technical steward and authority for AtkinsRéalis developer platforms and tooling, ensuring they are governed, secure, well-integrated and aligned to modern engineering practices. By defining clear platform standards, lifecycle controls and operational models, the role enables engineering teams to deliver faster and with confidence, while maintaining compliance, resilience and cost discipline.

Working closely with engineering, Digital, Innovation and IT teams, the role bridges platform strategy and hands-on execution, ensuring that developer platforms evolve in line with business needs and that adoption translates into measurable improvements in developer experience, delivery throughput and operational stability.

Your role

Platform Strategy, Governance and Stewardship

  • Own the end-to-end governance framework for AtkinsRéalis developer platforms, ensuring secure, compliant and consistent use across the organisation.
  • Define and maintain platform standards, policies, access models and guardrails aligned to regulatory requirements, security best practice and enterprise architecture principles.
  • Act as the decision authority for platform usage patterns, extensions, integrations and deviations, balancing innovation with control.
  • Provide clear guidance on platform suitability and intended use to engineering and delivery teams.

Developer Platform Portfolio and Lifecycle Management

  • Own the portfolio of developer platforms and tooling, including:
    • Azure DevOps.
    • GitHub Copilot and future GitHub Enterprise capabilities.
    • Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Copilot Studio).
    • Power BI.
    • Microsoft Fabric.
    • Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.
  • Enterprise Scale and Azure Accelerator deployments.
  • Define and manage platform lifecycles, including onboarding, evolution, upgrade planning and retirement.
  • Influence platform roadmaps to ensure alignment with engineering needs, emerging technologies and Microsoft ecosystem direction.
  • Assess and govern new tools, coding agents and platform capabilities, ensuring value, security and integration considerations are addressed before adoption.

Provisioning, Automation and Guardrails

  • Establish self-service provisioning models for developer environments, repositories, pipelines and workspaces.
  • Embed security, compliance and architectural guardrails into provisioning and automation workflows from the outset.
  • Promote standardised repository structures, pipeline patterns and automation approaches that reduce friction and improve consistency across teams.
  • Enable scalable onboarding of teams and projects without compromising governance or operational control.

Monitoring, Reporting and Platform Health

  • Define and implement monitoring and reporting capabilities across developer platforms to track:
    • Platform health, availability and performance.
    • Usage and adoption patterns.
    • Compliance with governance standards.
    • Develop dashboards and insights that support proactive decision-making, issue identification and continuous improvement.
  • Use data to inform platform investment decisions, capacity planning and optimisation opportunities.

Operational Model and Service Management

  • Define and mature the operational model for developer platform management, including:
    • Incident response and escalation.
    • Service continuity and resilience.
    • Support and escalation pathways.
  • Work with IT Service Management functions to ensure developer platforms are treated as critical enterprise services.
  • Ensure operational responsibilities are clear, documented and sustainable as platforms scale.

Change Management and Platform Adoption

  • Lead change management for platform upgrades, feature releases and capability enhancements.
  • Coordinate releases with engineering, Digital and IT stakeholders to minimise disruption and manage risk.
  • Ensure changes are communicated clearly and supported with appropriate guidance and documentation.
  • Actively manage platform adoption to ensure new capabilities translate into improved delivery outcomes, not fragmentation.

Education, Enablement and Technical Leadership

  • Develop and maintain clear documentation, standards and learning materials covering platform usage, best practices and approved patterns.
  • Deliver enablement sessions, guidance and technical oversight to engineering and innovation teams.
  • Provide technical leadership and assurance to innovation initiatives, ensuring alignment with platform strategy and enterprise standards.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, learning and responsible use of developer tooling.
