Overview
The Technical Services team is a group of seven technicians and engineers responsible for data management and special project execution. We are looking for a technically minded student to learn about the operations and maintenance of complex transit system, while providing fresh perspectives on how to solve difficult problems.
Our team's main function is the collection, analysis, and monitoring of data streams to support Canada Line Operations and Maintenance. We identify potential useful data and work with the relevant stakeholders to set up physical and digital monitoring infrastructure. Once in place, we support the organization with data analytics, extracting trends based on the equipment's maintenance requirements. For all data pipelines, we work to automate the collection, analysis, and presentation of the data, so that end users can access real-time information in dashboards and be notified of events as they occur. For well-established data streams, we attempt to decipher long-term trends that may allow us to improve our maintenance practices. For each step, our team creates custom solutions that are fit for purpose. This includes:
- Conceptualizing the best means and methods of collecting data from critical equipment.
- Hard-wiring IoT devices that communicate with databases to create new data pipelines.
- Creating database queries to access data from existing pipelines.
- Programming statistical analysis to simplify, clean, and extract useful information from the data.
- Creating customized dashboards using the Microsoft Power platform to display and create notifications from the data streams.
- Analyzing long-term data trends using novel methods (ML, etc.) to quantify anecdotal knowledge, or highlight unforeseen outcomes.
A motivated and self-starting co-op student will support our team by following some or all the above steps for currently under-utilized data streams. The successful candidate will be given multiple real-world problems to solve, all of which will contribute to the improvement of operations and maintenance of Canada Line. Desired outcomes and deliverables will be agreed upon at the outset of each assignment, but the process and specific solutions will be at the judgement of the individual. Guidance will be provided by all members of the team, and existing solutions will be available for ideas. Problem solving using all available resources is encouraged (past work experience, student projects, AI, etc.). This position requires full-time in-office attendance.
Your role
The actual breakdown of work will depend on the candidate's development interests, as a wide variety of assignments are available. Sample projects will be discussed during the interview process.
- Extract critical maintenance information by interpreting existing design drawings.
- Support projects by liaising with internal and external stakeholders for new designs and retrofits.
- Create CAD drawings and sketches to convey technical information to maintenance staff and vendors.
- Learn about the activities of our Operations and Maintenance department.
- Conduct on-site visits to work with technicians, take measurements, understand issues, and support the implementation of new solutions.
- Immersive and collaborative in-office work in a busy operating environment.
