Celebrating Emirati women's day: Meera's journey in architecture

Emirati Women's Day, celebrated annually on 28 August, honours the achievements and contributions of Emirati women across all sectors of society. Established in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the day recognises the pivotal role women play in the UAE's development and progress.

The architecture industry has witnessed remarkable growth in female participation, with Emirati women leading innovative projects that shape the nation's skyline. From sustainable urban planning to cutting-edge residential developments, these talented professionals are redefining what it means to build for the future.

Today, we spotlight Meera, a Graduate Architect at AtkinsRéalis, whose journey exemplifies the talent and determination of Emirati women in architecture.

Celebrating Emirati women's day: Meera's journey in architecture

Meet Meera: From student to graduate architect

Meera's passion for design began at the American University of Sharjah, where she studied architecture and gained valuable industry experience through an internship at Studio D04, a boutique design studio in Dubai. This early exposure to the professional world helped shape her understanding of the industry and fuelled her creative ambitions.

After graduating in June 2024, Meera worked as a research assistant for one of her professors before joining AtkinsRéalis in October 2024 as a Junior Architect. "I studied architecture at the American University of Sharjah, where I gained early industry experience interning at Studio D04, a boutique design studio in Dubai," she shares. Her transition to Graduate Architect in January 2025 marked the beginning of her formal graduate programme

Career growth and professional development

Meera's time at AtkinsRéalis has been defined by her work on a major residential development, where she's taken on a growing range of responsibilities. "I'm currently working on a large-scale project that includes podium design for office and retail spaces, as well as residential towers with a variety of unit types," she explains.

Her role expanded as the project grew from two towers to four, broadening her skills across both creative and technical aspects of architecture. "Along with the support of my team, I strengthened my design skills and gained invaluable experience," she shares.

Looking ahead, Meera is eager to train students as part of the Young Professionals Programme this September, reflecting her dedication to nurturing future architects.

Wisdom for aspiring architects

When asked about advice for those looking to grow their careers in architecture, Meera emphasises the importance of curiosity and active participation. "My advice would be to ask questions, stay curious, and get as involved as possible in the projects you're handling. The more you immerse yourself in the work, the more you'll learn, and the greater the responsibility you'll be entrusted with."

Her approach to professional development extends beyond the workplace. "I always try to maintain a work-life balance by staying organised and making time for my hobbies outside of work, which keeps me refreshed and focused at work," she explains. "Outside of work, I'm passionate about arts and design, which keeps me inspired and fuels my creativity."

Thriving in a supportive culture

Meera describes the culture at AtkinsRéalis as "collaborative, supportive, and innovative." This environment has been crucial to her development as a professional. "Ideas are freely shared and considered, regardless of your role or level of experience, and this supportive work environment fosters a culture of innovation and creativity," she observes.

The company's commitment to fostering talent is evident in how it promotes professional growth. "Our company promotes inclusion by creating an accessible and supportive environment where everyone belongs, regardless of age, culture, gender, and ability, can contribute and thrive," Meera notes.

Team collaboration remains one of her favourite aspects of working at AtkinsRéalis. "My favourite aspect of working with my team is the support and collaboration, which makes working enjoyable and rewarding," she shares.

Looking towards the future

As Meera continues her journey in architecture, she envisions expanding her expertise across different disciplines. "I see myself gaining regional or international experience and exploring different areas, from landscape to urban design, as my role evolves," she explains.

Her story represents the broader narrative of Emirati women breaking barriers and excelling in traditionally male-dominated fields. Through dedication, curiosity, and the support of forward-thinking organisations, talented professionals like Meera are shaping the future of architecture in the UAE and beyond.

Building tomorrow's opportunities

Meera's journey from architecture student to Graduate Architect at AtkinsRéalis exemplifies the potential that emerges when talent meets opportunity. Her contributions to major projects demonstrate the valuable perspectives and skills that Emirati women bring to the architecture profession.

As we celebrate Emirati Women's Day, stories like Meera's remind us that different perspectives in architecture creates stronger, more innovative solutions. Her advice to stay curious and get involved resonates beyond architecture, offering guidance to anyone seeking to make their mark in their chosen field.

If Meera's story inspires you, consider exploring opportunities at AtkinsRéalis—a place where Everyone Belongs.
