Building more than infrastructure: Kiran's story of impact at AtkinsRéalis

When Kiran joined AtkinsRéalis, he came with a strong academic foundation and a passion for engineering. What he found was much more than technical work. He found opportunities to contribute to projects that create lasting impact, collaborate with diverse teams, and grow into a more confident and well‑rounded professional.

One project that stands out is Sizewell C, one of the UK's most significant clean energy infrastructure developments. Being part of a project of this scale helped Kiran see first‑hand how engineering can contribute to wider societal goals, from strengthening energy security to supporting the transition to a lower‑carbon future. "Being part of this project made me realize that our work goes far beyond drawings and design deliverables," he says. "It contributes to something much larger."  The experience reinforced the importance of balancing engineering requirements, environmental responsibility, and project timelines. More importantly, it helped Kiran connect his day‑to‑day work with its real‑world impact on people and communities.

Solving challenges through collaboration

One of Kiran's most memorable experiences on Sizewell C came when he identified a conflict with a protected Root Protection Area that had not been recognised earlier in the project. Working closely with geotechnical and environmental teams, he helped develop alternative earthwork solutions and refine the design. By collaborating early and using shared models, the team was able to avoid environmental impacts while preventing potential delays.
For Kiran, this experience highlighted the value of multidisciplinary teamwork. "The team is technically strong, collaborative, and very supportive," he explains. "People communicate openly, work closely across disciplines, and focus on solving problems together." The success of the project was driven by proactive communication, shared accountability, and a collective focus on finding the best outcome.

Growing together

Kiran first felt a strong sense of belonging while working alongside multidisciplinary and multicultural teams at AtkinsRéalis. Despite differences in backgrounds, locations, and expertise, teams quickly formed effective working relationships where everyone's contribution was valued. An open and inclusive culture made it easy to share ideas, ask questions, and continue learning. Senior team members and managers have always been approachable and willing to share their knowledge, he says. That support has helped me grow both technically and professionally.
This collaborative environment, combined with a mindset that treats mistakes as opportunities to learn, has helped Kiran build confidence throughout his career.

Growing through global opportunities

Kiran's career has evolved significantly through exposure to international projects and increasing responsibilities. After spending nearly two years supporting the Sizewell C programme in the UK,
he transitioned to projects across the Middle East, expanding his understanding of regional standards, urban development, and infrastructure delivery.
One of the most challenging and rewarding projects in this chapter was Al Ramhan Island in Abu Dhabi, a large‑scale land reclamation and infrastructure development programme. The project's scale and complexity pushed him beyond his comfort zone, strengthening both his technical expertise and coordination skills. With the support of mentors, teammates, and leadership, Kiran gained the confidence to take on greater responsibilities, broaden his capabilities, and contribute more strategically to project delivery.

A place to build your future

When asked what has surprised him most about working at AtkinsRéalis, Kiran points to the people. There's a real sense of teamwork here, he says. You're encouraged to ask questions and learn, no matter your level. For him, thriving together means achieving success as a team while supporting one another through challenges. It's a culture that helps people grow professionally while feeling valued as individuals.
His advice to anyone considering a career at AtkinsRéalis?

If you're open to learning and contributing, you'll feel supported and have plenty of opportunities to grow.
Looking back, Kiran is proud not only of the projects he has worked on, but of the professional he has become, helping deliver infrastructure that creates lasting value for communities while shaping a more sustainable future.
