Building a global engineering career through trust, innovation, and leadership at AtkinsRéalis

For Ajit, a career at AtkinsRéalis has been about more than engineering. It has been a journey of growth, collaboration, and leadership, shaped by opportunities to work on impactful projects alongside teams across the globe.

Ajit Matkar

Starting with purpose

Ajit joined in January 2023 as an Assistant Engineer, attracted by the chance to contribute to infrastructure projects that create long‑term value. "I was drawn because of the opportunity to work on meaningful infrastructure projects that create long‑term value. What has kept me here is the supportive culture, the trust placed in individual contributors, and the ability to grow both technically and professionally." Today, he serves as a Senior Engineer and Mumbai D&LD Location Lead, a progression that reflects both his commitment and the opportunities available within the organization.

Growing through opportunity

Since joining the company, Ajit has taken on increasing responsibility across project delivery, stakeholder management, and team leadership. He credits much of this growth to leaders who empowered him to step outside his comfort zone and take ownership of larger challenges. Leadership consistently challenged and supported me, giving me larger scopes of work, trusting me to steer cross‑region projects, and encouraging better ways of working. The experience has helped him build not only technical expertise but also the confidence to lead and influence teams.

Collaborating across borders

A highlight of Ajit's career has been working with teams across the UK, Canada, and the United States. His experience includes projects such as McGill College Avenue in Canada, EDAROTH in the UK, and projects within the Power, Transmission & Distribution and Minerals & Metals sectors in the US. Working across regions has strengthened his ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and deliver results across different cultures, time zones, and stakeholder groups. For Ajit, however, the biggest achievement is not a single project. It's about setting clear goals, creating alignment across time zones, ensuring everyone has access to the same information, and helping diverse teams come together to deliver successfully as one.

A culture built on trust

One of the reasons Ajit has enjoyed his journey at AtkinsRéalis is the company's open and supportive culture. Employees are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and contribute beyond their day‑to‑day responsibilities. Whether it's through open forums, approachable leadership, or knowledge‑sharing sessions, people feel comfortable speaking up. That openness builds trust and strengthens team morale. This culture of listening and collaboration creates an environment where people are empowered to succeed.

Driving innovation

Ajit has also had opportunities to contribute to innovation within his team. One initiative involved automating repetitive design tasks using tools such as Dynamo for Civil 3D and automation libraries. By reducing manual effort and improving consistency, the team was able to spend more time addressing complex engineering challenges. "Automation helped us spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time creating value through engineering solutions."

The power of teamwork

When asked about his favorite aspect of working at AtkinsRéalis, Ajit points to the people. I enjoy the reliability of the team the most. When challenges arise, people step in without hesitation. That level of support creates unity and makes it easier to deliver complex work with confidence. The willingness of colleagues to support one another has been a key part of his experience and success.

Looking ahead

As the industry continues to evolve through digital transformation, sustainability, automation, and global collaboration, Ajit is excited about the future. Aligned with Vision 35, he sees both the company and his role continuing to grow. I see my role evolving toward strengthening delivery practices, enabling digital adoption, and helping build a more forward‑looking engineering environment where people, processes, and technology work seamlessly together. For professionals seeking meaningful work, global exposure, and opportunities to grow, Ajit's story highlights what makes AtkinsRéalis unique: a culture of trust, innovation, collaboration, and continuous development.
