From a team of three to a thriving BIM Hub: Vikas’s growth story at AtkinsRéalis.

Building projects, building teams, and building a career

What does it take to help build a team from the ground up while growing your own career at the same time? For Vikas, BIM Engineer II, the answer lies in embracing opportunities, trusting the process, and being part of a culture that empowers people to do their best work.

With 9 years of experience in civil engineering, Vikas joined AtkinsRéalis in September 2022 during an exciting phase of growth for the Pune office. What followed has been a journey marked by learning, collaboration, leadership, and the chance to contribute to something much bigger than himself.

Turning challenges into opportunities

When Vikas joined AtkinsRéalis, the Pune BIM team was just getting started. With only three team members, including himself as the second hire, the team faced the challenge of establishing credibility while taking on increasingly complex work.

One of the first major opportunities came in the form of the Crummock Water Project, a complex river rehabilitation initiative that required technical expertise, collaboration, and confidence. While the project's complexity made it a challenge, the trust placed in the Pune team by senior leadership became a defining moment.

Leveraging their Civil 3D expertise and a strong team‑first mindset, the group successfully delivered the project, earning positive client feedback and paving the way for future opportunities.

For Vikas, it was more than a successful project,it was proof that when people are trusted and empowered, extraordinary outcomes are possible.

Growing with the business

Over the last few years, Vikas has witnessed remarkable growth not only in his own career but also in the evolution of the BIM team itself.

What began as a small team has grown into a thriving group of more than 30 professionals delivering complex and impactful projects across the business. Along the way, AtkinsRéalis provided opportunities for him to take on greater responsibilities, participate in team coordination, and contribute beyond his core role.

This culture of ownership and trust has played a key role in shaping both his technical and leadership capabilities.

A culture that supports success

For Vikas, one of the biggest differentiators at AtkinsRéalis is the people‑first culture.

From approachable leaders and supportive colleagues to opportunities for continuous learning and development, he has found an environment where employees are encouraged to grow, innovate, and succeed. The organisation's collaborative culture has enabled him to strengthen his expertise while building the confidence to take on new challenges.

That support has also extended to professional development. One of Vikas' proudest achievements was earning his ICE EngTech Professional Accreditation alongside two colleagues, a milestone that reflected not only individual dedication but also the power of teamwork and shared success.

Innovation at the core

Whether through digital transformation, automation, or process improvements, employees are encouraged to challenge conventional thinking and explore smarter ways of working. For Vikas, this environment fosters creativity, drives continuous improvement, and ensures teams remain ready for the future of engineering and design.

Creating connections beyond work

While project delivery is important, Vikas believes that strong workplace relationships are equally valuable.

As an active contributor to Everyone Belongs initiatives and Sports Lead for the Creative Curiosity Hub (C2H), he helps create opportunities for employees to connect beyond their day‑to‑day responsibilities. From cricket and badminton tournaments to chess, carrom, and table tennis competitions, these activities bring colleagues together, strengthen team bonds, and contribute to a culture where everyone feels included and valued.

Looking ahead

As AtkinsRéalis continues to expand its global capabilities and invest in innovation, Vikas is excited about what the future holds.

Having been part of a journey that transformed a small BIM team into a growing and successful function, he is confident that the organisation will continue creating opportunities for individuals to learn, lead, and make a lasting impact.

Vikas' story is a testament to what can happen when talent is trusted, supported, and empowered to grow. At AtkinsRéalis, careers are built through meaningful work, strong collaboration, continuous learning, and the opportunity to contribute to projects that shape communities around the world.
