As a member of our Bridges & Civils team you’ll gain experience of all phases of design and assessment including initial concept designs, further design development and construction support.

Within this exciting and varied role you’ll undertake a variety of technical tasks including:

  • Technical report writing (including feasibility studies and design reports);
  • Design calculations (using Eurocodes, British Standards, DMRB and NR standards);
  • Structural analysis (using software such as LUSAS or MIDAS);
  • Computer aided modelling (including BIM)(utilising software such as Revit, Civil 3D);
  • Drawing preparation and presentation (using software such as AutoCAD);
  • Site inspections and supervision (ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations and quality assurance); and
  • Collaborating in complex projects through multi-disciplinary deliverables including interfacing with staff from Highways, Environmental, Geotechnical, and Drainage disciplines.



Further opportunities may include project management and secondment roles, as well as overseas working. Project experience is also available in other engineering disciplines beyond Transportation, including our Nuclear, UK Defense and International markets, working on projects such as Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station and New Murabba, Riyadh.

You will be involved in our focus on decarbonising the transportation sector, as we play a key role in enabling the UK to meet its long-term objectives in reaching net-zero, whilst also helping our clients to align their projects with the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Our teams work together on a broad array of important projects within the Strategic Highway, Strategic Rail, and Local Transport markets. You will have the opportunity to work on a broad project portfolio including Lower Thames Crossing, A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Improvements, A83 Argyll and Bute, East-West Rail, Maintenance contracts including the M25 Motorway and Civils Assessment Framework Agreement, and Irish Rail projects including Metrolink and Dart+ expansions

Our graduate scheme provides a variety of experience including technical, management, commercial and leadership to enable a fulfilling career with AtkinsRéalis. The scheme will enable successful candidates to develop towards chartership with a relevant institution such as the ICE and IStructE.

As a valued member of our Highway Infrastructure team, you’ll gain exposure to the fundamentals of highway, active travel and traffic engineering, including roads, public transport, cycle and pedestrian facilities. In this varied role you will develop yourself within technical, management, commercial and leadership areas to give you a well-rounded introduction to the working world of Civil Engineering.

Upon joining the highway practice you’ll gain experience of all phases of infrastructure design, from initial concept design through to detailed design and construction. We’ll empower you to develop your skills within a technical role, undertaking a variety of project-related tasks including:

  • Technical Report Writing
  • Site Visits and Surveys
  • Computer Aided Modelling and drawing preparation

Alongside these technical responsibilities, you’ll also build essential soft skills through regular training programs designed to enhance communication, problem-solving, report writing, and analytical thinking. To further support your growth, we offer certification and upskilling opportunities, helping you kickstart your career with industry-recognised credentials.

You will carry out all tasks with the continued support of more senior engineers within the team who will willingly share their knowledge and expertise to help you progress in your career. You’ll also benefit from structured mentorship and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities, ensuring you’re guided every step of the way as you work toward professional qualification with institutions such as the ICE or CIHT providing you with a mentor to help you understand and complete the requirements every step of the way.

Our teams work together on a broad array of projects within the local and strategic highway markets which recently includes a large number of sustainable transport / active travel projects transforming transport infrastructure while providing net-zero emissions, helping to achieve the UK's sustainable development goals by encouraging and enabling people to travel more healthily, safely and sustainably. You’ll have the chance to contribute to the highway works for long-term, high-impact projects such as Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station or the Lower Thames Crossing, gaining valuable experience and making a lasting contribution to the future of infrastructure.

Additionally, we provide professional services across a range of clients through national frameworks with local authority and strategic highways clients. This provides excellent opportunities to gain skills and experience in the full lifecycle of projects across design, project management and construction, building sustainable solutions for the maintenance and improvement of highways infrastructure, which are transferable to other projects. These roles require us to be an extension of the client organization in authorities such as Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire, with a growing pipeline that includes Norfolk and Essex from 2026, working closely to bring lasting benefits to the communities in which we work.

We offer opportunities to carry out exciting secondments to gain a better understanding of the project lifecycle. This may include project management or construction, as well as the chance to work within other disciplines such as bridge, geotechnical, drainage and environmental engineering. You’ll also have the opportunity to engage in STEM-focused volunteering initiatives, giving back to the community while developing your leadership and outreach skills.

We work collaboratively across the country, so you’ll be involved in projects with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. AtkinsRéalis, Balfour Beatty and Egis Road Operations UK are part of a consortium, creating Connect Plus Services, a unique partnership with a collective strength in highways asset care from finance, through to design, build, maintenance as well as day to day operation. As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major improvement projects, such as widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing hundreds of variable messaging signs and gantries, helping to maximise the use of the network and deliver more reliable journeys. We also manage the Dartford River crossing and operate and maintain 440 kilometres of motorway providing our customer and road user with a world-class highway service.

You will work with industry experts and gain exposure to a wide range of responsibilities which will include:

  • Applying engineering principles to practicable design and management of highways assets
  • Assisting in the delivery of Highway Renewals and Improvements including large and complex highways schemes to programme and budget.
  • Monitoring and asset analysis to determine asset performance and management requirements.
  • Helping to agree project briefs, programmes and budgets with Senior/Principal Engineer and Project Manager.

As the construction industry continues to develop and rely on information to support data driven decision making, the need for Information Managers becomes even greater. At AtkinsRéalis, we pride ourselves on technical excellence and you will be working directly with colleagues who are industry leaders in this field.

We have a clear ambition to lead the digital transformation of the built environment by harnessing information management, data, and technology.  As an Information Manager at AtkinsRéalis, you will shape and drive the use of 3D models with integrated data using BIM processes and technology across our existing portfolio of projects as well as our exciting upcoming opportunities.

Your role will include:

  • Taking the role and responsibilities of the Project Information Manager as identified in ISO 19650 and PAS1192-2:2013. 
  • Working with Subject Matter Experts and Discipline leads to establishing cost-effective, practical approaches to integrating BIM throughout delivery. 
  • Work with the relevant individuals to establish and support the Common Data Environment (CDE). 
  • Establish and work with a network of Lead Designers, Interface Managers and Task Information Managers to ensure adherence to the BIM requirements of the project.

Our teams work on a broad array of projects within the local transport, strategic highway & strategic rail markets from flagship projects such as the A66 North Trans-Pennine Improvement Scheme, Lower Thames Crossing & Network Rail’s Southern Integrated Delivery Framework as well as interesting opportunities on our local transport frameworks where we support our clients with essential maintenance and renewal projects on their road and active travel networks. You will form part of a team tasked with transforming transport infrastructure that provides net-zero emissions, which is critical in achieving the UK's sustainable development goals. 

You will also have the opportunity to support the digital transformation of our own business by contributing to the improvement of our processes as we strive to deliver our services more efficiently and effectively.  

We work collaboratively across the country so you will work on projects across different regions with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. As AtkinsRéalis is a global company there may be opportunities for overseas working.

Railway electrification is pivotal to the government's strategy for decarbonizing the transport network and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. As a part of the Railway Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) Design team, you will play a central role in this initiative, offering comprehensive services that span from initial concept and feasibility studies to detailed design and implementation management. Additionally, our team provide on-site construction expertise and support along with consultancy and advisory services for rail electrification projects.

You’ll be a part of a team of a basic design team who design things from first principles and provide support to a wider team involved in electrifying new railway corridors; helping to provide design solutions for the structural and civil aspects of 25kV AC and DC railway electrification.

On a day-to-day basis you will be involved in:

  • Calculating design loads for OLE foundations
  • Designing new foundations for OLE structures
  • Designing new components, conducting structural analysis for suitability of new components different SOFTWARE such as STAAD Pro
  • Assessing the existing components/foundations for suitability
  • Calculating the wind loads acting on different structure types
  • Specifying the associated equipment from different design ranges
  • Working on feasibility studies for provision of electrification of our existing network
  • Technical studies/Investigative work to develop cost saving ways to implement electrification and heavy, metro/light rail and tramway electrification.
  • Be on site to conduct surveys to assess the existing infrastructure



Our portfolio of projects includes a broad range of high-profile clients, including Network Rail, Transport Scotland, Transport for Wales, HS2 and Irish Rail. We also work on a number of international projects across the world supporting overseas railway infrastructure and metro projects.

We work collaboratively with colleagues across various OLE teams within the UK, US and our GTC teams in India, allowing you to work on projects across different global regions. Working on flagship projects is different countries may also provide the opportunity to work abroad, should this interest you.

All of this creates an interesting and varied pipeline of works that allows our graduates to develop quickly, backed by a well-established and strong technical network to support professional development and industry accreditation through chartership with professional institutions such as the ICE, PWI etc.

In Asset Management, we help our road, rail, water and energy customers to get the most out of their built infrastructure assets. We provide the information they need to make key plans and decisions about the future, such as when to invest in their assets and what maintenance activities to prioritise. We help clients understand their data and bring it to life, using tools such as FME and Power BI.

We also advise clients on the implementation of national guidance and best practice, such as the uptake of risk-based approaches to asset management. This often involves working closely with clients to understand their needs and aspirations, followed by developing and implementing improvement or transformation plans. The projects we work on are varied, dynamic and stimulating, providing plenty of opportunity for new challenges and personal growth.

Structures Asset Management

Locations: Birmingham, Glasgow

  • Carry out condition inspections on structural assets using Bridge Condition Indicators
  • Working on innovative projects to assess material performance and degradation in structures
  • Using and developing materials deterioration curves as part of whole-life asset management
  • Applying analytical mathematics (essential), and coding and programming skills (desirable) to analyse data from our clients, draw conclusions and provide advice
  • Providing support in the development of asset management approaches for structures
  • Building knowledge and experience in using DMRB standards relating to structural assets

Strategic Advice

Locations: Birmingham, Manchester

  • Providing advice to infrastructure owners in the development of their asset management policies, strategies, and overall improvement plans to achieve efficient asset management.
  • Providing technical and contractual advice to Local Authorities, Department for Transport and Strategic Transport Authorities across the UK.
  • Working with infrastructure owners to help them assess risk and improve the resilience of their networks and their assets.
