GIS technician (Intermediate Level)

Toronto, Ontario, Canada | Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Overview

Within the national geomatics service, you will support the team's growth and, as part of a multidisciplinary team, contribute to environmental studies (biophysical characterization, authorizations and permits, construction monitoring) and environmental and social impact assessments across the mining, industrial, energy, infrastructure, and marine sectors. You will collaborate with GIS analysts and specialists within a structured, pan‑Canadian team.

Your role

  • Produce maps, graphics, and tables (technical and thematic cartography) in line with corporate standards.

  • Update, structure, and validate (QA/QC) geospatial data.

  • Digitize, georeference, and integrate data from multiple sources.

  • Design and update georeferenced plans, maps, and databases; organize geospatial databases.

  • Perform spatial analyses (basic to intermediate) and map results using ArcGIS Pro.

  • Maintain and document metadata according to internal procedures; apply quality and governance standards of the national service.

  • Provide technical support to the geomatics team; act as a resource person for project teams; respond to internal and external information requests.

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary project teams (environmental specialists and engineers).

About you

  • Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, or a related field.

  • Experience in cartographic production and spatial database management; solid understanding of quality control principles.

  • 2–3 years of relevant professional geomatics experience.

  • Excellent command of ArcGIS Pro; strong knowledge of the ArcGIS suite (ArcGIS Online and/or ArcGIS Enterprise) and of paper and web cartography principles.

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD; proficiency with MS Office tools (Excel, Word).

  • Knowledge of FME and/or programming basics (Python) is an asset.

  • Autonomy, rigor, organizational skills, and strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, work under pressure, and meet tight budgets and deadlines.

  • Willingness to learn and deepen knowledge to better understand the issues across various related disciplines.

  • Motivation, strong analytical capacity, and problem‑solving aptitude.

  • Rigor, organization, and autonomy.

  • Ability to support several projects concurrently, with diverse clients and teams.

  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver within tight budgets and short timelines.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

*Expected compensation for this role is between Pay Range $60, 900 - $90,000 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
